Aurangzeb’s rule and his treatment of the Hindus

The reign of Aurangzeb : his treatment of the Hindus
By Indigenous

Aurangzeb at the time of his accession

In June 1659, when Aurangzeb assumed the full honours of the imperial dignity under the title of Alamgir, conferred by his father, he was forty years of age, mature in body and mind, well skilled in affairs, both civil and military, and firmly convinced that it was his duty to uphold his religion at any cost.

The history of his reign, extending like Akbar’s over a period of nearly fifty years, may be condensed as being that of the failure of an attempt to govern a vast empire, inhabited chiefly by Hindus, on the principles of an ascetic Moslem saint.

Aurangzeb’s principles of government

Aurangzeb never flinched from the practical action logically resulting from his theory, that it was his duty as a faithful Moslem king to foster the interests of orthodox Sunni Islam, to suppress idolatry, and, as far as possible, to discourage and disown all idolaters, heretics (including Shah Mohammedans)’ and infidels.

He could not do all he would, but he did all he could to carry his principles into effect. No fear of unpopularity, no consideration of political expediency, no dread of resistance , was suffered to turn him for a moment from his religious duty as he conceived it.

The emperor Aurangzeb was a man of high intellectual powers, a brilliant writer, as his letters prove, an astute diplomatist, a soldier of undaunted courage, a skilled administrator, a just and merciful judge, a pious ascetic in his personal habits, and yet a failure.

Palliation of his fight for the throne. He crossed a river of blood to gain the throne. The best defence that can be offered for the crimes by which he won it, is that indicated in his letter reproaching his old tutor:

‘Ought you not’, he writes, ‘to have foreseen that I might at some future period be compelled to contend with my brothers, sword in hand, for the crown, and for my very existence. Such, as you must have well known, has been the fate of the children of almost every king of Hindustan.’That defence, as far as it goes, is sound. If any one of his brothers had gained the prize, Aurangzeb would have suffered death, and he can hardly be blamed because he preferred to inflict, rather, than suffer, death. The deposition of his father was a necessary consequence of the defeat of Dara Shikoh, who had already assumed the imperial authority with the assent of the aged emperor, who was then no longer fit to rule. Once the deposition had been effected, Aurangzeb spared his father’s life though sternly refusing him liberty.

The brutal treatment of Dara Shikoh, which cannot be justified, is explained by Aurangzeb’s intense hatred for all forms of religious heresy. His eldest brother, an avowed free-thinker, was to him a thing accursed, and a fit object for extremest insult. Aurangzeb regarded the world from the point of view of a Moslem ascetic, and as against the rights of orthodoxy the claims of kindred or of justice to Hindu unbelievers were nothing in his eyes. He took up the position of Philip II of spain in relation to the people of the Netherlands. Like that monarch he was intensely suspicious, trusting neither man nor woman.

His love, although sometimes given, was seldom sought and, perhaps, never returned, except by one grandson, prince Bedar Bakht.

Mir Jumla’s attack on Assam

In the earlier part of the reign the only wars, other than that of the succession, which claim notice are those with Assam and Arakan. Mir Jumla, the able general, who had done such good service for Aurangzeb when he was viceroy of the Deccan, and again in hunting down Shuja, was rash enough to follow in the footsteps of Mohammed the son of Bakhtyar (ante, p. 106) and to invade Assam. Mir Jumla failed like his early predecessor, and, like him, died soon after his return (1663).

Annexation of part of Arakan by Shayista Khan

In the course of the same year, Aurangzeb’s uncle, Shayista khan, who had allowed himself to be surprised by the Marathas in the Deccan, was transferred to Bengal as the successor of Mir Jumla. He governed the eastern province for about thirty years. His expulsion of the English merchants from his territory in 1686 has been mentioned (ante,p.161). At an earlier ate (1666) he had cleared out the portuguese and other pirates who infested the rivers in the neighbourhood of Chittagong, and sent an expedition against the king of Arakan, who had abetted the evil-doers, and was compelled to cede the Chittagong territory.

Twenty-year peace

‘The expeditions into Assam and Arakan did not disturb the general peace of Hindustan. A profound tranquillity, broken by no rebellion of any political importance, reigned throughout Northern India for the first twenty years of Aurangzeb’s rule.’ It is true that for nearly three years (1673-5) the Afghan clans beyond the Indus gave trouble, and during part of that time Aurangzeb in person superintended the operations of his generals, but the peace of India, as a whole, was not disturbed by skirmishing on the north-western frontier.

Aurangzeb’s history

Aurangzeb was a religious bigot, nad he reversed in every respect the wise policy of Akbar towards his Hindu subjects. In 1669, hearing that certain Brahmins were giving religious lectures at Multan and Benares, he ordered ‘all governors of provinces to destroy with a willing hand the schools and temples of the infidels’.Inconsequence, the temple of Vishwanath at Benares was destroyed. In 1672 a Hindu religious sect called the Satnamis rebelled, and was crushed with ruthless severity. In 1675, Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the sikh gurus (post, p.p 224-6), was taken and executed because he refused to embrace Islam.

In 1678, Raja Jaswant Singh of Marwar died. The emperor tried to seize his children and have them brought up as Moslems. He adopted the same policy towards the young Maratha Prince Shahu. Finally in 1679 he revived the hated jizya or poll-tax which Akbar had abolished. By his bigotry Aurangzeb rent in pieces the mighty Mogul empire, and paved the way for the British conquest of India.

Alienation of the Rajputs

After some time the rana of Mewar (Udaipur) made an honourable peace, by a treaty which contained no allusion to the odious jizya, and Raja Jaswant singh’s son was recongnized as chieftain of Marwar. The mischief, however, had been done, and Aurangzeb had wantonly thrown away his most trusty weapon, the devotion of the Rajput chivalry.

During the following struggle in the Deccan he learned the extent of his loss, but never repented of his action or swerved a hair’s breadth from his principles. Notwithstanding the treaty, Rajputana was not pacified, and the greater part of the country continued in revolt until the end of the reign.

Prohibition of histories

A curious decree of the eleventh year of the reign abolished the office of imperial chronicler and forbade the publication of histories by private persons. This prohibition has caused a certain amount of indistinctness in the details and obscurity in the chronology of the greater part of Aurangzeb’s long reign. Such histories as were written secretly had to wait for
publication until the emperor’s death.

Aurangzeb and the Deccan

In 1657, when called away to take part in the fight for the throne, prince Aurangzeb, then viceroy of the Deccan, that is to say of Khandesh, Berar, Telangana, and Ahmadnagar, seemed to be an on the point of annexing the kingdoms of Golkonda and Bijapur and bringing the whole of the Deccan under the rule of his father. Many years elapsed before Aurangzeb as emperor was able to return to the scene of his early labours.

Meantime a new power had arisen, which, rashly despised at first, became strong enough to baffle all the efforts of the imperial grand army, and to condemn the aged emperor to long-drawn years of fruitless toil, ending in lonely death, ‘without heart or help’.

The new-born Maratha power. Before taking up the story of Aurangzeb’s campaigns in the Deccan during the twenty-six years from the close of 1681 to 1707, we must go back to trace the origin of the new-born Maratha power and sketch the life of Sivaji, who gave it birth. the Marathas are the Hindu population of Maharashtra, the country of the western Ghats, lying to the south of the Satpura hills, to the west of the warda river, and extending southwards as far as Goa. In the thirteenth century this region had been the centre of the Yadava power (ante,p.84). It’s best known towns are Poona, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nasik.

Description of the Marathas

The inhabitants of the barren uplands of the Deccan, with its fierce heat and uncertain rainfall, are a frugal, manly race. “They are ,” says Elphinstone , “small, sturdy men, well made though not handsome. They are all active, laborious, hardy, and preserving. If they have none of their indolence or their want of worldly wisdom.”

One feature of the Deccan must be particularly noted. It is intersected by a number of mountain-ranges, and high flat topped hills rise up on all sides. These hills are easily convertible, by means of a few bastions, into forts, which are almost impregnable without the use of siege artillery. These natural strongholds played an important part in the great struggle against the Mohammedans. The Marathas would retire to them when hard pressed, and then, when the opportunity offered, they would sally forth and hang upon their opponents’ flanks like a pack of wolves, cutting off stragglers and intercepting supplies. The Marathas were admirably adapted for these guerilla tactics.

Early life of Sivaji

Sivaji, the great Maratha champion, belonged to the Bhosle family. His father Shahji was a soldier of fortune, and while he was away on distant campaigns in southern India, on behalf of the kings of Bijapur, the lad was brought up at poona under his mother Jijabai. He became inspired with the idea of freeing his country from the Mohammedan yoke. At the age of nineteen he began his career by seizing some of the hill forts in the Poona district.

In 1659 the Biajpur government began to realize that the danger was serious. Afzal khan, a famous general, was sent with a large force. But he became entangled in the dense jungles between Wai and Mahableshwar, near sivaji’s fort of Pratapgarh. Here Afzal khan was tempted to a conference and cut down. His army was suddenly attacked from every side and completely annihilated. Bijapur now thought it prudent to come to terms.

Shayista Khan

The Maratha now ventured to ravage the Mogul territories, and thus provoked Aurangzeb to send his uncle, Shayista khan, to suppress him. But the Mogul commander, having allowed himself to be surprised, was transferred to Bengal, as already narrated (ante,p.208).

Auragzeb’s mistake

Other generals, including prince Muazzam, were now sent against the rebel, and after some time (1665) Raja Jai Singh of Jaipur persuaded Sivaji to submit and even to come to Agra to do homage. Aurangzeb enforced the court rules of etiquette on his opponent, and so incurred his undying enmity. Sivaji escaped secretly from the court, returned to the Deccan, and in February 1668 compelled Aurangzeb to recognize him as Raja.

Renewed war; death of Sivaji, 1680

The war was soon renewed, and the Marathas freely plundered the imperial territories, including the rich town of Surat, all except the English factory there. In 1674 Sivaji proclaimed himself sovereign of the Deccan with royal pomp at his capital of Raigarh. He then crossed the Narmada, and levied the chauth, or fourth part of the land revenue, a species of blackmail, payment of which was supposed to protect a district from plunder.

In the south, where his father and brother had held jagirs, he occupied the fortresses of Vellore and Jinji (Gingee), and was granted additional territory by the king of Bijapur in payment for help against the Moguls. In 1680 he died at the age of fifty-three, leaving behind him a great reputation as the champion of Hinduism, the creator of a nation, and the founder of a powerful kingdom.

Civil administration

Sivaji, who had begun life as a petty chieftain, showed, as his power grew, that he knew how to govern his unruly subjects. He was a devout Hindu, and , although illiterate and unable to sign his name, was well versed in the sacred lore dear to all Hindus. His government, accordingly, was organized on a Hindu pattern. The supreme authority under the Raja was a council of eight ministers who followed the principles of Brahmin law. The chief minister was called the Peshwa.

Other members of the council severally looked after various departments-finance, the army, and so forth. Maratha territory was divided into districts, each with a staff of officials, and each village had its headman (Patel). Higher local officers were known as Desadhikars, Talikdars, and Subadars. The ministers usually held military commands, and left their civil duties to deputies (Kabaris). The revenue settlements were made annually. Justice was in the hands panchayats.

Army and navy

The army was controlled by a commander-in-chief, below whom was a regular gradation of officers. The men were paid. At first Sivaji relied on his infantry recruited from the Western Ghats and the Konkan man who could climb like monkeys and capture the hill forts which were the seat of his power. Gradually the light cavalry became the most important Maratha arm. The horsemen preferred the lance to any other weapon. Discipline was strict. No soldier was allowed to bring a woman into the field on pain of death.

In this respect Sivaji’s force differed widely from the armies of the Moguls, and even from those of the East India Company, which were always clogged by a train of female followers. The chief object of the Maratha raids was to till the treasury; hence all plunder had to be strictly accounted for. Cows, cultivators, and women were not to be injured. A fleet capable of carrying four thousand soldiers helped the operations of the coast.

Character of Sivaji

Sivaji was a born leader of men, and a real master of guerilla warfare. There can be no doubt that he rally believed himself to be born with a mission ‘to protect Brahmins and kind’, and to set his country free. He lived in a dark and cruel age, when religious feeling ran high, and admittedly his career was stained by deeds which would be condemned in modern times. Of the death of Azal Khan it is impossible to speak with certainly, but the murder of the two Maratha chiefs, Chandrarao More and Baji Ghorpade, and the destruction of their capitals, is hard to defend. Equally cruel were the brutal tortures inflicted on the Hindu baniyas of Surat to extract their hidden treasures.

But on the whole he was a chivalrous and far-sighted man, and we may fully concur with the character given to him by Khafi Khan, the Mohammedan historian, who was certainly not biased in his favour:

‘He made it a rule that, wherever his followers went plundering, they should do no harm to mosques, the Book of God, or anyone’s women. Whenever a copy of the holy Koran cam into his hands, he treated it with respect, and gave it to some of his Mussulman followers. When the women of any Hindu or Mohammedan were taken prisoners by his men and they had no friend to protect them, he watched over them till their relations came to buy them their liberty.’

Aurangzeb assumes command in the Deccan

At the close of 1681, a year after Sivaji’s death, Aurangzeb in person took command of the army of the Deccan, resolved to extinguish the kingdoms of Golkonda and Bijapur, to curb the insolence of the Marathas, and, if possible, to bring the whole south under Mogul rule.

His treatment of the Hindus

The emperor’;s obstinate adherence to his wrong-headed policy of annoying his Hindu subjects added immensely to the inherent difficulties of his task. The first thing he did was to issue stringent orders for the collection of the arrears of the jizya tax in the southern provinces, and in three months he compelled his officers to squeeze twenty-six thousand rupees out of Burhanpur.

Insult was added to pecuniary injury by a proclamation that no Hindu should ride in apalankeen or an Arab horse without special licence. Such measures, of course, made the entire Hindu population the friends of his foes; but no consideration of prudence sufficed to turn Aurangzeb from his fixed policy.

The affairs of Golkonda

When he returned to the Deccan he found the government of Golkonda in confusion. The king, Abul Hasan, had abandoned himself to pleasure and ceased to take any part in public affairs, which were controlled by the representative of the emperor at his court and by two Hindu officials.

Aurangzeb, who could not endure Hindu influence, sent his son, Prince Muazzam, to restore order. The prince dallied over his task, but at last attacked the city of Hyderabad, which his soldiers plundered without permission. The king took refuge in the adjoining fortress of Golkonda.

In 1685 the prince, having made peace on terms displeasing to his father, was recalled.

Annexation of Bijapur, 1686

The emperor, leaving Golkonda alone for the moment, deputed another son, prince Azam, to reduce Bijapur. He had little success, and was superseded by his father, who took the capital in 1686 after an investment lasting more than a year. The kingdom ceased to exist, and the splendid city became the abode of desolation, as it is for the most part to this day.

Siege and annexation of Golkonda

Aurangzeb then resolved to make an end of the sister state of Golkonda, and to depose the king, who was accused of sending money to the Marathas, and allying himself with infidels.

When Abul Hasan perceived that his destruction was decided on, he is said to have become a changed man, to have cast aside his evil habits and played the part of a hero. Certainly the city was put in a good state of defence, and when the siege began early in 1687, the imperial troops found that they had been set a hard task. The Marathas cut off the supplies of the besiegers, who were reduced to extremities by famine and plague.

An assault ordered by the emperor failed utterly, and it seemed as if the siege must be raised. But a traitor admitted the Mogul army, and Golkonda fell (September 1687). By these conquests and later operations the imperial commanders were able to levy tribute from Tanjore and Trichinopoly in 1691, which date may be taken as marking the furthest southern extension of Mogul power.

Struggle with the Marathas

The two Mohammedan kingdoms had been destroyed, but the Marathas remained unsubdued, and the remaining twenty years of Aurangzeb’s life were spent in the vain attempt to subdue them. The emperor never returned to the north, and wasted those weary years gaining ‘ a long series of petty victories followed by larger losses’. His armies seemed to be getting the upper hand between 1698-1701, but in the succeeding years the enemy recovered the lost ground.

Maratha method of warfare

The Marathas never, or hardly ever, risked a general engagement, but expended all their energies, like the Boers in the south African war, in cutting off supplies, intercepting convoys, and incessantly harassing the enemy. Mounted on hardy ponies, they were able to move with a quickness which completely baffled the imperial armies; and, so each man carried with him his simple food and belongings, they needed no transport trains.

Inefficiency of the Mogul army

The Mogul forces, on the other hand, were unwieldy and almost immovable. The royal tents alone occupied a space three miles in circuit, and a contemporary traveller describes the whole camp as being ‘ a moving city containing half a million of souls’. Grant Duff sums up the situation in these words: ‘These apparently vigorous efforts of the government were unsubstantial; there was motion and bustle, without zeal or efficacy; the empire was unwieldy, its system relaxed, and its officers corrupt beyond all example.’ Success in these circumstances was impossible.

Execution of Sambhaji, Raja Shahu

For a time the emperor’s arms had a promise of success, and Aurangzeb had the poor satisfaction of putting to death with torture Sambhaji, a son of Shivaji, in 1689. He spared the life of sivaji junior, nicknamed Shabu (sahu), the infant son of Sambhaji, and kept his at court until his own death, when the young man was released and returned to his own dominions. He became Raja in 1708 after a contest.

Tara Bai

A few years after Sambhaji’s execution, Tara Bai, widow of Raja Ram, another son of Sivaji, had retrieved the Maratha losses, and directed the policy of devastating the imperial territories with such energy that the emperor was shut up in his camp, and his treasure was plundered almost under his eyes.

Retreat and death of Aurangzeb

The mogul army gradually crumbled to pieces, and ultimately (1706) Aurangzeb was forced to retire on Ahmadnagar, where he died at the beginning of March 1707 (N.S), in the forty-ninth year of his reign and the eighty-eighth of his life. His dust lies under a plain tomb in the village of Rauza or Khuldabad near Daulatabad.

Aurangzeb’s farewell words

However severely the policy and conduct of Aurangzeb may be judged, it is impossible to refuse pity to the old man on his death-bed when he addressed his sons in these sad words:

‘I know not who I am, where I shall go , or what will happen to this sinner, full of sins. Now I will say good-bye to every one in this world and entrust every one to the care of God. My famous and auspicious sons should not quarrel among themselves and allow a general massacre of the people who are the servants of God. . . My years have gone by profitless. God has been in my heart, yet my darkened eyes have not recognized His light. . . There is no hope for me in the future. The fever is gone, but only the skin is left. . . The army is confounded, and without heart or help, even as I am; apart from God, with no rest for the heart yet my darkened eyes have not recognized His light. . . There is no hope for me in the future. The fever is gone, but only the skin is left. . . The army is confounded, and without heart or help, even as I am; apart from God, with no rest for the heart. . . When I have lost hope in myself, how can I hope in others? . . . You should accept my last will. It should not happen that Mussulmans be killed and the blame for their death rest upon this useless creature. . . I have greatly sinned and know not what torment awaits me. . . I commit you and your sons to the care of God, and bid you farewell. . . May the peace of God be upon you.’

Aurangzeb’s failure

The causes of Aurangzeb’s failure are obvious enough, and have been indicated in the course of the narrative, but it may be well to sum them up briefly. Aurangzeb acted as if he were merely the head of the Sunni sect Mohammedans, and not the protector of all the races and creeds of India. Akbar had realized the truth that the authority of the monarch of an empire inhabited chiefly by Hindus could not be lasting unless it rested on the support of all his people. During the greater part of his reign he treated all religions with impartial justice.

Only in his latter days he forgot himself so far so to violate his avowed principles by heaping insults upon Islam. Jahangir accepted and put in practice the tolerant maxims of his father, encouraging the building of Hindu temples as of Christian churches. Shahjahan revived then old evil policy or persecution, harrying the christians and razing temples to the ground. Aurangzeb went farther, especially after 1678, when the death of Raja Jaswant Singh deprived his countrymen of their most powerful support.  The emperor, then, in 1679,reimposed the wisely abolished. He carried to monstrous lengths the policy of destroying the holy places of Hinduism, and may be reasonably charged with the overthrow of thousands of temples.

His measures forced all Hindus to regard him as their enemy and deprived him of the willing service of the Rajput clans. Sivaji, whom the emperor despised as a mere robber chief, was honoured by the Marathas as a hero, the champion and protector of Hinduism against the imperial bigot. Aurangzeb’s Sunni bigotry made him as hostile to the shah states of Bijapur and Golkonda as he was to the Hindu powers. He thus shattered the forces of Islam in the Deccan, by which the Hindu revolt of the Marathas might have been held in check.

The emperor’s suspious disposition, which prevented him from trusting anybody, deprived him likewise of all chance of finding trustworthy agents. He was, consequently, ill served. His life was so prolonged that he continued to grasp the sceptre after he had lost the strength to use it with effect. His officers, corrupted by luxury, lacked the vigour of their ancestors and were incapable of honest exertion.

The long-drawn-out Deccan wars exhausted a large part of the huge treasure of Shahjahan, and ruined the finances of the empire. Financial ruin involved the collapse of the whole administration. The subject might be treated from many other points of view, but what has been said may suffice.

How dare you say that, Shivaji Maharaj was “illiterate” and even couldn’t sign his name ? Come to Pune, the very early capital of Marathas, and see yourself letter signed by Shivaji Maharaj. Do not try hencefoth, to write about History as per your own will – it will reflect your lack of knowledge.

Secondly the concepts of ethics change through ages. One, who is acclaimed as a ‘Myrter’ could be a rebellion to other people. Likewise, the punishments given to Chandrarao More and Baji Ghorpade are perfectly justified, as they both were engaged in anti-Shivaji movement. In Surat, Shivaji Maharaj collected money not only from Muslim baniyas but also from Hindu baniyas – being a staunch Hindu himself !! This clearly shows his secularism indeed !! It was quite common in those days to collect money from the enemy’s territoy.

Yes, Aurangazeb was indeed great. That’s why he killed his brothers and imprisoned his father to ascend the throne. Also he had imposed Jizya as he cared greately for the Kafirs!! Abdul, more than the Kafirs in present day India, it was the ancestors of the Muslims in present day India who had suffered at the hands of the Islamic invaders and ruthless rulers like Aurangazeb. If you want to consider that as an honour to your ancestors, nobody has any problem.

            >>>>>and firmly convinced that it was his duty to uphold his religion at any cost>>>>>> that is the crux of the matter. He also believed in “fight till the Religion is for Allah” and did what was possible to convrert as many Kafirs as possible!!

            • Anonymous

” fight till the Religion is for Allah” brother there is no word of religion, rather the Arabic word is “Hukm” which means ” the command, judgement ” killing others is not the command of Allah, demolition of temples also does not fall under the command of Allah, You can find clear Quranic verses in this regard.

              • Maybe, you should be telling this to Muslims, not infidels. Muslims will be judged by their actions, not by their words. What you are saying is totally different from how Muslims have behaved through centuries.

AURANGJEB NAME SHOULD BE DEMOLISH FROM THE HISTORY OF HINDUSTAN

        • K M Asim

You know Avinash why Aurangzed killed brouor eathers and imperisoned his father? His brother was his rebellion and also non muslim influenced, and shahjehan was Aashikmizaj and was more busy in love affairs which is not suitable for muslim and surely not suitable for a muslim ruler. No muslim invader has let public suffer any point, they invaded kings, both muslim and non muslim king always wanted to conqoer each other,in this situation the better wins.History is full of those subject which shows kindness of muslim invaders in the world, you will never agree but this is the hot true,,on other hand the cruelty of non muslim ruler is crystal clear

          • Indian Realist

.No muslim invader has let public suffer any point, they invaded kings,

You have clearly never read the official court histories of Aurangzeb or the rest of the Mughals like Babar-nama. Why do you monotheists stay so blind deliberately? The world you describe exists only in your delusions and conspiracy theories.

          • Shlok

@K.M.Asim, you don’t need to rely on persons like Thapar and her Marxist cronies to understand the personality of Aurangzeb. He was absolutely barbaric, extremely cruel. Muslim chroniclers and historians who wrote during that era wrote gleefully on the role played by their rulers and saints i destroying the temples of the infidels (the Hindus). Any person even with basic common sense knows this. And when these rulers broke temples, they went ecstatic. They became Ghazis – Mahmud Ghaznavi is a classic example. You should read these 2 books a) Hindu Temples : What Happened to them http://www.voiceofdharma.org/books/htemples1/
and b) The Legacy of Mulsim rule in India
            http://www.voiceofdharma.com/books/tlmr/index.htm
The latter book should also be of interest to Cynical and Sunil, as they are obsessed with lower castes. This book was a real eye-opener. By the way, just in case you were not aware, I belong to an extremely backward caste from UP. And despite what you might claim, most of my best friends have been Brahmins. Of course, I do not want to deny that I had Muslim friends also, at least the ones from my village are peaceful people. But I want to emphasize to you that don’t get caught in the illusion created by our Marxist friends of caste hatred. That might be political, but at the ground levels, believe me, there are no problems.

this is not a jalan . history is full of of his cruel deeds after knowing all facts you are talking like a child. auranzeb was a true villion. and shivaji was a true hero they never force to accept hinduism or insulting policy against muslims. Be daring to accept truth.

  2. Amol N Bankar

I am very sorry to say that, some points you had mentioned are debatable. It is quite clear that Shivaji was not illiterate. There are pretty much examples given by Shri Gajanan Mehendale in his Magnum-Opus Raja Shiva Chhatrapati, Kindly verify the statements from available historical records before publishing it to public.

  3. Kuldeep

As per the source of this article, this was written by muslims who will naturally show Shivaji Maharaj in poor light. He was literate and it shows the incompetence and jealousy that muslim mughals had towards Shivaji. The source is “according to mughal documents” but the bias of muslim jihadis should be researched and facts presented to public.
    Thanks

  4. literacy neither implies, nor is it a substitute for, wisdom.

It is an overrated skill. Much like dead cells of hair and skin is given undue importance in todays’ world. A result of delusion.

well the text written is very nice …but could u clear tht why was aurangzeb unpopular by the time of his death

    • Even after reading all that is it NOT CLEAR TO YOU? OMG!!!

He was an extremist, He even tortured Muslims who did not do things according to kuran. He levied heavy taxes specially on hindu, made them suffer a lot. Many of the hindu temples were destroyed and mosques were made over them.

Aurangzeb was very stingy that he used to sow carpets to sell with his own hands to buy food and rest of his necessities.

It was the time of great atrocities. A time of great destruction.

Fatima, as you people hate Narendra Modi, despite his well known administrative qualities. Various indicators point to Muslim’s well being in Gujarat, similarly we hate Aurangzeb, despise him & want his name to be besmirched with invectives. Moreover he was no Narendra Modi. His stupidities were responsible for crumbling of once powerful Mughal empire. I and many other Hindu’s like me are proud of our forefather’s courage to stand against that bigoted Muslim ruler & did not convert to Islam. I am proud to be a Hindu and I respect all religions. AURANZEB WAS A GREAT KING HIS GREATNESS CAN BE PROVE AS THE FLOWING POINT
1> HE HAD A STONG SUPPORT OF HINDU KING SUCH AS SWAI MAN SINGH JASWANT SINGH ETC. IF WAS NOT THEN HE NEVER RULED INDIA 50 YR
    2. HE NEVER DRANKS AND SPENT ALL HIS TIME FOR THE COUNTRY
3>HE HAS A HUGE SUPPORT OF HINDU AND 80% OF HIS SOLGER WAS HINDU FROM THIS EVINENT IT IS PROVE THAT HE DID NOT TRY TO FORCE HINDU TO BECOME MUSLIM
4.IN HIS ADMINISTRATION MAXIMUM JUGES ARE HINDU AND HE ALSO GAVE HIGER RANK IN MILATRY TI HINU KING FOR EXAMPLE SWAI MAN SINGH WAS COMANDER IN CHIEF And fight AGAINST SIVAJI AND ALSO WON

    • You have no idea how much Rajputs despised Aurangzeb. In Rajputana – Jaipur’s Kachwaaha Rajputs were the only close allies to Mughals since Akbar’s times. Mirza Raja Jai Singh and son Ram Singh of that lineage were protecting the vulnerable Shivaji house arrested at Aurangzeb’s fort. To protect him when Aurangzeb wanted Shivaji killed, they gave security bond taking personal responsibility of Shivaji. Immediate circle of soldiers around Shivaji was the band of Rajputs followed by Mughals in outer layers.
Aurangzeb is his lust for power had his father and brothers killed, a man who couldn’t be of his own kin can never be a just ruler of the masses.
Aurangzeb with his brutal bigoted policies alienated the few Hindu allies he had.
Mewar and Marwar forces joined to deny him Rajasthan and its trade routes. Eventually he found himself lonely fighting Marathas in Deccan’s futility where he emptied his static treasures in constant war and repented in the shock of defeat till his death. He dreaded the Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Marwar and as recorded in Tarikh Mohammed Shahi, exclaimed upon Maharaja’s death “Darwaja-e kufra shikast” i.e the door opposing the Islamic faith in India is broken. He did not have the courage to impose Jaziya till Maharaj was alive.
His shollow understanding of human faith and values is proven by the fact that he tried to subdue Hinduism by destroying temples and killing civilians.
Persian manuscript no.71 at Royal Asiatic Library preserving letters exchanged between Aurangzeb and his rebel son Akbar, in the course of the three year Rajput War (1679-82), reflects bigoted Aurangzeb’s hatred for Rajputs and hindus in general.

ABOUT JIZYA THE HINDU HISTORIAN MADE MIS UNDERSTANING
        FOLLOWING FACT ARE TRUE
Now let us deal with Aurangzeb’s imposition ofthe jizya tax which had drawn severe criticism from many Hindu historians. It is true that jizya was lifted during the reign of Akbar and Jahangir and that Aurangzeb later reinstated this. Before I delve into the subject of Aurangzeb’s jizya tax, or taxing the non-Muslims, it is worthwhile to point out that jizya is nothing more than a war tax which was collected only from able-bodied young non-Muslim male citizens living in a Muslim country who did not want to volunteer for the defense of the country. That is, no such tax was collected from non-Muslims who volunteered to defend the country. This tax was not collected from women, and neither from immature males nor from disabled or old male citizens. For payment of such taxes, it became incumbent upon the Muslim government to protect the life, property and wealth of its non-Muslim citizens. If for any reason the government failed to protect its citizens, especially during a war, the taxable amount was returned.

It should be pointed out here that zakat (2.5% of savings) and ‘ushr (10% of agricultural products) were collected from all Muslims, who owned some wealth (beyond a certain minimum, called nisab). They also paid sadaqah, fitrah, and khums. None of these were collected from any non-Muslim. As a matter of fact, the per capita collection from Muslims was several fold that of non-Muslims. Further to Auranzeb’s credit is his abolition of a lot of taxes, although this fact is not usually mentioned. In his book Mughal Administration, Sir Jadunath Sarkar, foremost historian on the Mughal dynasty, mentions that during Aurangzeb’s reign in power, nearly sixty-five types of taxes were abolished, which resulted in a yearly revenue loss of fifty million rupees from the state treasury.

While some Hindu historians are retracting the lies, the textbooks and historic accounts in Western countries have yet to admit their error and set the record straight.

Aurangzeb never wanted islam to be influenced by other religion because Quran says that the only true deen is islam, it was very necessary for him guard islam by corruption,he also never demolished temple due to religious point of view, but the reason was that the corrution was emerging from their. For this he also demolished mazars also, because no religion in the world allows corrution to run. But due to this great works, non muslims and many others defame him,but Aurangzeb always treated them gently and never forced anyone to be muslim as Quran doesnot allow this.Otherwise no nonmuslim had been left for today to create corrution,

You never ruled India for 1000 years — it is the Turks and Central Asians who ruled some parts of India with a lot of bloodshed and in constant fight with the Hindus. You, sir, are just the progeny of defeated Hindus and raped Hindu women. Arabs, Iranians, and Uzbeks all laugh at you with derision for claiming you are one of them. They treat you as untouchables. Get out of your delusions and learn to see the world as it actually was and ponder over the fact that why are Muslims unable to invent anything or add to scientific knowledge.

      • Shlok

@K.M.Asim, read your own historians and see what they say. Don’t believe in the trash that these Marxist historians weave. Do you know the story of Fateh Singh and Jorawar Singh, the 2 brave sons of Guru Govind Singh who were walled to death by Aurangzeb because they refused to become Muslim. Try telling a Sikh that these 2 brave sons of Guru Govind Singh were not killed because they refused to embrace Islam and you see what happens to you. So, stop whitewashing Aurangzeb’s evil deeds. You will get nowhere. About your question as to how Hindus would survive if Aurangzeb wanted to convert all, your question is typical of an ignorant one. Have you read our history? Do you know that Aurangzeb and for that matter all other Muslim rulers could not sit in peace even for 1 minute. Every single time they had to fight. Of course, they were aware that numerically they were weak, so long before Akbar had bought ‘peace’ with the Rajputs (except Mewar) in which the Rajputs accepted the suzerinity of the Mughals, in return the despotic rulers would not touch Hindu temples in their domains. Of course, our Rajput kings had become weaklings. They were busy fighting among themselves and over a period of time, yielded (except Mewar). But during Aurangzeb’s time, the Hindus of the entire country were inflicting bloodly losses on the Mughals, including the Jats and Rajputs next door (the Rathores of Jodhpur broke with the Mughals), besides the Sisodiyas of Udaipur, the Sikhs, the Marathas and many other Hindu kingdoms in the South, they were liberating the territories. Assam was never defeated. In fact, these Marxist historians who go gaga over Aurangzeb’s rule fail to realize that towards the end of his reign, Mughal decline had already set. As to the Hindus in their domain, many Hindus were allowed to live by paying the discriminatory Jizyah and suffer untold miseries and hardships. Those who wanted to escape this life could simply adopt Islam and be free of them. But for others even this option was not given. They had to convert. Therefore, don’t waste your valuable time over here. Read the proper correct history and then come back

        KM ASIM

Please stop preaching Marxist history to us conscious Hindus. We have enough of their version of history and we are quite aware of the stock-in-trade of the History retailed by the Marxist historians who never get tired of telling us Hindus that the Islamic invaders of India had invaded India to establish an egalitarian society here by liberating the oppressed, exploited and trodden under foot low caste people of India from the stranglehold of the atrociously wily , and scheming Brahmans . Also, they tell us that Islamic marauders like Ghaznavi, Aurangzeb were destroying temples only to loot the ill-gotten money hoarded by the criminal Brahmins by exploiting the hapless low-caste people. But, you know this pure nonsense and meant only to whitewash the blood-soaked history of Islamic invasion of India.

Defiling or destroying the places of worship of the non-believers forms the one of most sacred duties performed by the true followers of the criminal creed of Islam. Muhammad was the first to have set the wheel of iconoclasm in motion against non-believers. This act of Muhammad was followed religiously by all other latter day Islamic war zealots without exception . One of the glaring examples of such iconoclasm carried out recently was the destruction of Bamiyan Budhhas by Taliban impostors. Now, can you tell me Asim how much ill-gotten money the Taliban bastards recovered by destroying the Bamiyan Buddhas?

THE ORIGNAL TRUTH AND ALL ANSWER OF QUESTION ABOUT THE AURANZEB ARE AS FOLLOW

Of all the Muslim rulers who ruled vast territories of India from 712 to 1857 CE, probably no one has received as much condemnation from Western and Hindu writers as Aurangzeb. He has been castigated as a religious Muslim who was anti-Hindu, who taxed them, who tried to convert them, who discriminated against them in awarding high administrative positions, and who interfered in their religious matters. This view has been heavily promoted in the government approved textbooks in schools and colleges across post-partition India (i.e., after 1947). These are fabrications against one of the best rulers of India who was pious, scholarly, saintly, un-biased, liberal, magnanimous, tolerant, competent, and far-sighted.

Fortunately, in recent years quite a few Hindu historians have come out in the open disputing those allegations. For example, historian Babu Nagendranath Banerjee rejected the accusation of forced conversion of Hindus by Muslim rulers by stating that if that was their intention then in India today there would not be nearly four times as many Hindus compared to Muslims, despite the fact that Muslims had ruled for nearly a thousand years. Banerjee challenged the Hindu hypothesis that Aurangzeb was anti-Hindu by reasoning that if the latter were truly guilty of such bigotry, how could he appoint a Hindu as his military commander-in-chief? Surely, he could have afforded to appoint a competent Muslim general in that position. Banerjee further stated: “No one should accuse Aurangzeb of being communal minded. In his administration, the state policy was formulated by Hindus. Two Hindus held the highest position in the State Treasury. Some prejudiced Muslims even questioned the merit of his decision to appoint non-Muslims to such high offices. The Emperor refuted that by stating that he had been following the dictates of the Shariah (Islamic Law) which demands appointing right persons in right positions.” During Aurangzeb’s long reign of fifty years, many Hindus, notably Jaswant Singh, Raja Rajrup, Kabir Singh, Arghanath Singh, Prem Dev Singh, Dilip Roy, and Rasik Lal Crory, held very high administrative positions. Two of the highest ranked generals in Aurangzeb’s administration, Jaswant Singh and Jaya Singh, were Hindus. Other notable Hindu generals who commanded a garrison of two to five thousand soldiers were Raja Vim Singh of Udaypur, Indra Singh, Achalaji and Arjuji. One wonders if Aurangzeb was hostile to Hindus, why would he position all these Hindus to high positions of authority, especially in the military, who could have mutinied against him and removed him from his throne?

Most Hindus like Akbar over Aurangzeb for his multi-ethnic court where Hindus were favored. Historian Shri Sharma states that while Emperor Akbar had fourteen Hindu Mansabdars (high officials) in his court, Aurangzeb actually had 148 Hindu high officials in his court. (Ref: Mughal Government) But this fact is somewhat less known.

Some of the Hindu historians have accused Aurangzeb of demolishing Hindu Temples. How factual is this accusation against a man, who has been known to be a saintly man, a strict adherent of Islam? The Qur’an prohibits any Muslim to impose his will on a non-Muslim by stating that “There is no compulsion in religion.” (surah al-Baqarah 2:256). The surah al-Kafirun clearly states: “To you is your religion and to me is mine.” It would be totally unbecoming of a learned scholar of Islam of his caliber, as Aurangzeb was known to be, to do things that are contrary to the dictates of the Qur’an.

Interestingly, the 1946 edition of the history textbook Etihash Parichaya (Introduction to History) used in Bengal for the 5th and 6th graders states: “If Aurangzeb had the intention of demolishing temples to make way for mosques, there would not have been a single temple standing erect in India. On the contrary, Aurangzeb donated huge estates for use as Temple sites and support thereof in Benares, Kashmir and elsewhere. The official documentations for these land grants are still extant.”

A stone inscription in the historic Balaji or Vishnu Temple, located north of Chitrakut Balaghat, still shows that it was commissioned by the Emperor himself. The proof of Aurangzeb’s land grant for famous Hindu religious sites in Kasi, Varanasi can easily be verified from the deed records extant at those sites. The same textbook reads: “During the fifty year reign of Aurangzeb, not a single Hindu was forced to embrace Islam. He did not interfere with any Hindu religious activities.” (p. 138) Alexander Hamilton, a British historian, toured India towards the end of Aurangzeb’s fifty year reign and observed that every one was free to serve and worship God in his own way.

ACT, the Trust which I head, is holding an exhibition on ‘Aurangzeb as he was according to Mughal documents’, from February 16 to 20 at New Delhi’s [ Images ] Habitat Center, the Palm Court Gallery, from 10 am to 9 pm.

Why an exhibition on Aurangzeb, some may ask. Firstly, I have been a close student of Indian history, and one of its most controversial figures has been Aurangzeb (1658-1707). It is true that under him the Mughal empire reached its zenith, but Aurangzeb was also a very cruel ruler – some might even say monstrous.

What are the facts? Aurangzeb did not just build an isolated mosque on a destroyed temple, he ordered all temples destroyed, among them the Kashi Vishwanath temple, one of the most sacred places of Hinduism, and had mosques built on a number of cleared temple sites. Other Hindu sacred places within his reach equally suffered destruction, with mosques built on them. A few examples: Krishna’s birth temple in Mathura; the rebuilt Somnath temple on the coast of Gujarat; the Vishnu [ Images ] temple replaced with the Alamgir mosque now overlooking Benares; and the Treta-ka-Thakur temple in Ayodhya. The number of temples destroyed by Aurangzeb is counted in four, if not five figures. Aurangzeb did not stop at destroying temples, their users were also wiped out; even his own brother Dara Shikoh was executed for taking an interest in Hindu religion; Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded because he objected to Aurangzeb’s forced conversions.

Yet, Percival Spear, co-author with Romila Thapar of the prestigious A History of India [ Images ] (Penguin), writes: ‘Aurangzeb’s supposed intolerance is little more than a hostile legend based on isolated acts such as the erection of a mosque on a temple site in Benares.’ L’histoire de l’Inde moderne (Fayard), the French equivalent of Percival Spear’s history of India, praises Aurangzeb and says, ‘He has been maligned by Hindu fundamentalists’. Even Indian politicians are ignorant of Aurangzeb’s evil deeds. Nehru might have known about them, but for his own reasons he chose to keep quiet and instructed his historians to downplay Aurangzeb’s destructive drive and instead praise him as a benefactor of arts.

Since then six generations of Marxist historians have done the same and betrayed their allegiance to truth. Very few people know for instance that Aurangzeb banned any kind of music and that painters had to flee his wrath and take refuge with some of Rajasthan’s [ Images ] friendly maharajahs.

Thus, we thought we should get at the root of the matter. History (like journalism) is about documentation and first-hand experience. We decided to show Aurangzeb according to his own documents. There are an incredible number of farhans, original edicts of Aurangzeb hand-written in Persian, in India’s museums, particularly in Rajasthan, such as the Bikaner archives. It was not always easy to scan them, we encountered resistance, sometimes downright hostility and we had to go once to the chief minister to get permission. Indeed, the director of Bikaner archives told us that in 50 years we were the first ones asking for the farhans dealing with Aurangzeb’s destructive deeds. Then we asked painters from Rajasthan to reproduce in the ancient Mughal style some of the edicts: the destruction of Somnath temple; the trampling of Hindus protesting jaziya tax by Aurangzeb’s elephants; or the order from Aurangzeb prohibiting Hindus to ride horses and palanquins; or the beheading of Teg Bahadur and Dara Shikoh.

People might say: ‘OK, this is all true, Aurangzeb was indeed a monster, but why rake up the past, when we have tensions between Muslims and Hindus today?’ There are two reasons for this exhibition. The first is that no nation can move forward unless its children are taught to look squarely at their own history, the good and the bad, the evil and the pure. The French, for instance, have many dark periods in their history, more recently some of the deeds they did during colonisation in North Africa or how they collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War and handed over French Jews who died in concentration camps (the French are only now coming to terms with it).

The argument that looking at one’s history will pit a community against the other does not hold either: French Catholics and Protestants, who share a very similar religion, fought each other bitterly. Catholics brutally murdered thousands of Protestants in the 18th century; yet today they live peacefully next to each other. France [ Images ] fought three wars with Germany [ Images ] in the last 150 years, yet they are great friends today.

Let Hindus and Muslims then come to terms with what happened under Aurangzeb, because Muslims suffered as much as Hindus. It was not only Shah Jahan or Dara Shikoh who were murdered, but also the forefathers of today’s Indian Muslims who have been converted at 90 per cent. Aurangzeb was the Hitler [ Images ], the asura of medieval India. No street is named after Hitler in the West, yet in New Delhi we have Aurangzeb Road, a constant reminder of the horrors Aurangzeb perpetrated against Indians, including his own people.

Finally, Aurangzeb is very relevant today because he thought that Sunni Islam was the purest form of his religion and he sought to impose it with ruthless efficiency — even against those of his own faith, such as his brother. Aurangzeb clamped down on the more syncretic, more tolerant Islam, of the Sufi kind, which then existed in India. But he did not fully succeed. Four centuries later, is he going to have the last word? I remember, when I started covering Kashmir [ Images ] in the late ’70s, that Islam had a much more open face. The Kashmir Muslim, who is also a descendant of converted Hindus, might have thought that Allah was the only true God, but he accepted his Kashmiri Pandit neighbour, went to his or her marriage, ate in his or her house and the Hindu in turn went to the mosque. Women used to walk with open faces, watch TV, films.

Then the shadow of Aurangzeb fell on Kashmir and the hardline Sunnis came from Pakistan and Afghanistan: cinemas were banned, the burqa imposed, 400,000 Kashmiri Pandits were chased out of Kashmir through violence and became refugees in their own land and the last Sufi shrine of Sharar-e-Sharif was burnt to the ground (I was there). Today the Shariat has been voted in Kashmir, a state of democratic, secular India, UP’s Muslims have applauded, and the entire Indian media which went up in flames when the government wanted Vande Mataram to be sung, kept quiet. The spirit of Aurangzeb seems to triumph.

But what we need today in India — and indeed in the world — is a Dara Shikoh, who reintroduces an Islam which, while believing in the supremacy of its Prophet, not only accepts other faiths, but is also able to see the good in each religion, study them, maybe create a synthesis. Islam needs to adapt its scriptures which were created nearly 15 centuries ago for the people and customs of these times, but which are not necessarily relevant in some of their injunctions today. Kabir, Dara Shikoh and some of the Sufi saints attempted this task, but failed. Aurangzeb knew what he was doing when he had his own brother beheaded. And we know what we are saying when we say that this exhibition is very relevant to today’s India.

May the Spirit of Dara Shikoh come back to India and bring back Islam to a more tolerant human face.

It is difficult to untangle this historical mess without scrutinizing the accusations against Aurangzeb rationally.
During Aurangzeb’s long reign of 50 years, many Hindus, notably Jaswant Singh, Raja Rajrup, Kabir Singh, Arghanath Singh, Prem Dev Singh, Dilip Roy, and Rasik Lal Crory, held very high administrative positions.
Two of the highest ranked generals, Jaswant Singh and Jaya Singh, in Aurangzeb’s administration were Hindus. Other notable Hindu generals who commanded a garrison of two to five thousand soldiers were Raja Vim Singh of Udaypur, Indra Singh, Achalaji and Arjuji. One wonders if Aurangzeb was hostile to Hindus, why would he position all these Hindus to high positions of authority, especially, in theInterestingly, the 1946 edition of history text book, Etihash Parichaya (Introduction to History), used in Bengal, published by the Hindustan Press, 10 Ramesh Dutta Street, Calcutta, for the 5th and 6th graders states: “If Aurangzeb had the intention of demolishing temples to make way for mosques, there would not have been a single temple standing erect in India. On the contrary, Aurangzeb donated huge estates for use as Temple sites and support thereof in Benares, Kashmir and elsewhere. The official documentations for these land grants are still extant.” military, who could have mutinied against him and removed him from his throne?
A stone inscription in the historic Balaji or Vishnu Temple, located north of Chitrakut Balaghat, still shows that it was commissioned by the Emperor himself. The proof of Aurangzeb’s land grant for famous Hindu religious sites in Kasi, Varanasi can easily be verified from the deed records extant at those sites. The same text book reads: “During the 50-year reign of Aurangzeb, not a single Hindu was forced to embrace Islam. He did not interfere with any Hindu religious activities.” (p. 138) Alexander Hamilton, a British historian, toured India towards the end of Aurangzeb’s 50-year reign and observed that every one was free to serve and worship God in his own way.

        Dear Abdi,

Seeing your name, I am guessing you are a Muslim and you are feeling obliged to defend Aurangzeb. Given below is an extract from a book by Shri Sita Ram Goel. His books were banned by “sickularists” since nothing can be said against “Religion of peace.” Do you know that there was a circular by Bengal government in 1989 to say that Islamic rule should not be shown in bad light, whatever the evidence be.

You can read the extract at http://voiceofdharma.com/books/htemples2/ch4.htm. Here it is shown that how pro Congress/Communist historians have twisted history of which you have just given example. Will be uncomfortable reading for you.

“There is no substance in the Marxist statement that the temple was destroyed because it had “acquired considerable wealth” which attracted Aurangzeb’s greed for booty or that the destruction of the temple was “politically motivated as well, for at the time when the temple was destroyed he faced problems with the Bundela as well as the Jat rebellions in the Mathura region.” We have only to refer to contemporary records to see how these explanations are wide of the mark.

The temple of Kešavadeva was destroyed in January, 1670. This was done in obedience to an imperial firmãn proclaimed by Aurangzeb on April 9, 1669. On that date, according to Ma’sîr-i-Ãlamgîrî, “The Emperor ordered the governors of all provinces to demolish the schools and temples of the infidels and strongly put down their teaching and religious practices.”14 Jadunath Sarkar has cited several sources regarding the subsequent destruction of temples which went on all over the country, and right up to January 1705, two years before Aurangzeb died.15

None of the instances cited by him make any reference whatsoever to booty or the political problem of rebellion. The sole motive that stands out in every case is religious zeal. Our Marxist professors will find it very hard, if not impossible, to discover economic and/or political motives for all these instances of temple destruction. The alibis that they have invented in defence of Aurangzeb’s destruction of the Kešavadeva temple are, therefore, only plausible, if not downright fraudulent. It is difficult to believe that the learned professors did not know of Aurangzeb’s firmãn dated April 9, 1669 and the large-scale destruction of Hindu temples that followed. If they did not, one wonders what sort of professors they are, and by what right they pronounce pontifically on this subject. “

      Dear Akber

Today’s Muslims are not responsible for what was done centuries ago. What hurts us Hindus most that we are ridiculed in our country by the psuedo secular media and congress stooges history writers. There was an official order by Bengal government to not show Islamic rulers in Bharat in bad light. So much for secular history.

All the stories pertaining to societal ills are linked to us Hindus. On one hand you say only Hindus have ills of castes then why reservations for other casteless “progressive” religions such as Islam and christanity.

Just because Hindus dont attack others so easily and dont get angry that doesnt mean every tom dick and harry should treat us like doormat.

It is a fact that Muslim rulers destroyed Hindu Temples to build mosques over them. Still those killers were called secular kings. What bullshit

Todays’ media will not give space to any such debate but will find reasons to debate imaginary crimes against Nuns and never care to followup the real story. Hence the Hindu anger comes out on Internet.

      Hope you would understand!!

Can Muslim people ever think anything else than their religion? “Only our Kuran is best, only our religion is best, only our kings are best” is this all of them going to think forever?.Thats the reason most of you people are so much backward.Pakistan, Iran etc. are 100% muslim countries;then why do
the people in these countries become victim of terror everyday? You need to think seriously about this.

The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority of one million people that has lived in Rakhine state for centuries. But they face systematic religious and ethnic discrimination because under Myanmar’s constitution, they are not classified as one of 135 legally recognized ethnic minority groups with Myanmar citizenship.
Ethnic Burmese consider the Rohingya as “illegal immigrants” from Bangladesh. But Bangladesh does not recognize the Rohingya as its citizens.
The Burmese government has committed atrocities against Muslims, including mass killings and rapes, burning of Muslim villages, arrests, forced labor, and torture. Many Muslims attempt to escape to Bangladesh for sanctuary. However, in Bangladesh the Myanmar refugees face discrimination, exploitation, and deportation. In Myanmar, the Rohingya are a stateless people.

The Maratha Empire waged war for 27 years with the Mughals from 1681 to 1707.
which became the longest war in the history of India.
Marathas remained the preeminent power in India until their defeat in the Second and Third Anglo-Maratha Wars (1805–1818), which left Britain in control of most of India.
The empire at its peak stretched from Tamil Nadu in the south, to Peshawar (modern-day Pakistan) on the Afghanistan border in the north and led Expeditions to Bengal in the east. A large portion of the empire was coastline that had been secured by a potent navy under commanders such as Kanhoji Angre. He was very successful at keeping foreign naval ships, particularly of the Portuguese and British, at bay.Securing the coastal areas and building land-based fortifications were crucial aspects of the Maratha’s defensive strategy and regional military history.
In a bid to effectively manage the large empire, semi-autonomy was given to strongest of the knights, which created a confederacy of Maratha states. They became known as Gaekwads of Baroda, the Holkars of Indore and Malwa, the Scindias of Gwalior and Ujjain, Bhonsales of Nagpur.
The Marathas eventually emerged victorious. Shivaji pioneered “Shiva sutra” or Ganimi Kava (guerrilla tactics), which leveraged strategic factors like demographics, speed, surprise and focused attack to defeat his bigger and more powerful enemies..

      ANOTHER INDIAN EMPIRE
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839) was the founder of the Sikh Empire,
The whole of the central Punjab, ethnic Pashtun territories in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,Multan ,Peshawar (1818) and Jammu and Kashmir (1819) which was captured from Durrani rulers of Afghanistan.
The Maharaja of the Punjab. The Sher-e-Punjab (Lion of the Punjab) remembered much affection by the Sikhs and built two of the most sacred temples in Sikhism i.e. Harmandir Sahib( much of the present decorative gilding and marblework date back from the early 19th century, the gold and intricate marble work were conducted under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh), Takht Sri Patna Sahib( the birth place of Guru Gobind Singh), and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib(the place where Guru Gobind Singh died, in Nanded, Maharashtra in 1708).
In 1831, Ranjit Singh deputed his mission to Simla to confer with the British governor general, Lord William Bentinck. Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa, Fakir Aziz-ud-din and Diwan Moti Ram ― a Sikh, a Muslim and a Hindu representative ― were nominated Ranjit Singh encircled himself with an array of generals and soldiers. They were men from different clans, castes and regions
Jean-François Allard became a General in the army of Ranjit Singh.
The Sikhs never razed places of worship to the ground belonging to the enemy.
      Ranjit Singh’s Empire was secular.

General Jean-François Allard ( was awarded the Légion d’Honneur by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Bright Star of the Punjab by Maharaja Ranjit Singh) serving in Napoleon’s army. In 1820, Allard left for Punjab, where he in 1822 entered the service of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Another European taking service in the Punjab with Allard in 1822 was the Italian Jean-Baptiste Ventura. They were joined four years later by the Neapolitan Paolo Di Avitabile and the Frenchman Claude August Court.A Spaniard, Oms, also served with them for a while. Together, these officers drilled the Sikh army into a formidable force.
Allard was commissioned to raise a corps of dragoons and lancers.

    • Kanhoji Angre or Sarkhel Angre (Sarkhel is a title meaning Admiral of the Fleet) (August 1669 – 4 July 1729) was the first notable chief of the Maratha Navy in 18th century India. He fought successfully all his life against the British, Dutch and Portuguese naval interests in the Indian Ocean during the 18th century, and hence was alleged by them to be a pirate. Similar work was carried out against the colonial powers by the Kunjali Marakkars in the 16th century. Despite the attempts of the British and Portuguese to subdue Angre, he remained undefeated until his death.

@ m2k, practice what you preach!

      >>>>Aurangzeb has gone and v are discussing and talking bad about a dead person>>> and you think Krishna is a living person who will reply to you here!!

Mahabharata is an Epic (Story). Don’t try to justify historical events with something written in some Stories. Aurangzeb was a historical person who lived nearer to our time.

      • The Rosetta stone, or the key, to the Krishna story is Dwarka. The strongest archaeological support comes from the structures discovered in the late 1980s under the seabed off the coast of modern Dwarka in Gujarat by a team of archaeologists and divers led by Dr S.R. Rao, one of India’s most respected archaeologists. An emeritus scientist at the marine archaeology unit of the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, Rao has excavated a large number of Harappan sites, including the port city of Lothal in Gujarat.

In his book The Lost City of Dwarka, published in 1999, he writes about his undersea finds: “The discovery is an important landmark in the history of India. It has set to rest the doubts expressed by historians about the historicity of Mahabharata and the very existence of Dwarka city.”

Conducting 12 expeditions during 1983-1990, Rao identified two underwater settlements, one near the present-day Dwarka and the other in the nearby island of Bet Dwarka. This tallies with the two Dwarkas mentioned in the epic. The underwater expeditions won Rao the first World Ship Trust Award for Individual Achievement.

Another important find by our divers was a seal that establishes the submerged township’s connection with the Dwarka of the Mahabharata. The seal corroborates the reference made in the ancient text, the Harivamsa, that every citizen of Dwarka should carry such a seal for identification purposes. Krishna had ruled that none without the seal should enter it. A similar seal has been found onshore as well.

        • The Sarasvati River is one of the chief Rigvedic rivers mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts. The Nadistuti hymn in the Rigveda mentions the Sarasvati between the Yamuna in the east and the Sutlej in the west, and later Vedic texts like Tandya and Jaiminiya Brahmanas as well as the Mahabharata mention that the Sarasvati dried up in a desert
          According to recent scientific facts:
Sarasvati dried up due to tectonic shift.
          Dwarka disappeared into the sea,and
Mohanjodaro civilization destroyed due to atomic explosion.

          • JGN

            >>>Mohanjodaro civilization destroyed due to atomic explosion>>> do you think they had the technology to refine the fissile materials and make bombs? Why should also be as dogmatic as the followers of the West Asian Religions?

Even without Ram (and Ramayana) and Krishna (and Mahabharata) Hinduism will survive but the Religions swearing by one God and one Book cannot survive without them.

      • Amazingly, we even have Greek records pointing to the same approximate date. Greek travellers who came to India following Alexander’s invasion have left us some tantalizing references to Krishna and also to Indian historical records as they existed in their time. Authors like Pliny [Gaius Plinius Secundus (23 AD – August 25, 79 AD), better known as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman author, naturalist, and natural philosopher, as well as naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and personal friend of the emperor Vespasian. Spending most of his spare time studying, writing or investigating natural and geographic phenomena in the field, he wrote an encyclopedic work, Naturalis Historia, which became a model for all such works written subsequently. Pliny the Younger, his nephew]:referred to Krishna as Heracles, derived from Hari-Krishna. They record that the Indian Heracles — our Krishna — was held in special honour by the Sourseni tribe one of whose major cities was Methora. We can recognize them as Shuraseni and Mathura. (Shura was the father of Vasudeva and the grandfather of Krishna.)
Indian Heracles (Krishna) is recorded by the Greeks as having lived 138 generations before the time of Alexander and Chandragupta (Sandracottos )which we may take to be c. 330 BC. Taking 20 years per generation, which is known to be a good average when ancient Indian dynasties are involved, we are led to the computation 2760 + 330 = 3090 BC which is remarkably close to the Kali date of 3102 BC. So a reckoning based on ancient Greek records takes us again to the traditional date of c. 3100 BC.
In summary, we may safely conclude that technical and literary evidence from several independent sources point to the traditional Kali date of 3102 BC as being close to the actual date of the Mahabharata War. We have therefore overwhelming evidence showing that Krishna was a historical figure who must have lived within a century on either side of that date, i.e., in the 3200-3000 BC period.

      • Recently, NASA had put pictures on the Internet of a man-made bridge, the ruins of which are submerged in Palk Strait between Rameshwaram and Sri Lanka. This clearly should be treated as historical evidence that corroborates its mention in Valmiki Ramayana. Even if Adam’s Bridge(as called by western ) is a natural geological formation, it could have been beautifully used by Ram to construct a temporary bridge for his army to cross over to Sri Lanka. this is one logic. another, which is more nearly that is, as per the description of Ram’s birth time, the date come out as 10th jan, 5114BC , , and NASA is claiming the bridge age would be 1.75million years ago! we know, in another calculation, that date was also calculated, if it is true! means, if we believe, Ram was born in the middle years of 28th treta yuga , then we have to believe that Ram could have been born in 1.75 million years ago(this is matching with the period mentioned by NASA about the age of Ram setu/adam bridge) !
But after so many years it’s impossible for any buildings, dwellings, statues, seals, coins, cloths, bones or weapons to exist. There also cannot be physical records or evidences of every person who walked this earth so long ago. physical evidence of Ramayan like what are available in Ayodhya or arbuda pahar(mount abu) ,

Please go to the serial Comedy Circus there your jokes may get some laughter. Here it is nothing more than disdain.

If you or your Zakir Nalayak believes in the sanctity of Hindu scriptures then why not worship all our gods and goddesses since all are true. Our Sanatan Dharma gives us freedom to worship god as Nirakar or formless and Saakar (formed one).

So please get lost and if you want to question then please question your great “Relgion of peace” and conduct of Mohammed including his 11 wives with one double his age and one that of 7-8yrs old, one a daughter in law of his adopted son and one who he fucked right on the day he killed her husband right in the battle field.

Your religion could not think of heaven as anything more than a harem of 72 virgins with big boobs. This is the standard of your philosophy and you are coming here to teach us.

Vineet, when you say “on the day he killed her husband right in the battle field”, are you referring to Kinana of Khyber ? Kinana was the guard of the treasure of the tribe, and he was caught alive. According to the Koran, Muhammad ordered that a fire be lighted on his chest, and this was done by the madmen who are called as “companions of the prophet”, he was almost dead after hours of torture when Muhammad beheaded him. He then proceeded to rape Kinana’s wife, Safiya and took her for another of his wives.

I’m sorry if this sounds horrifying, but the Koran is the most terrifying book someone can read, and it’s strange that people who have not read it try to justify the behaviour of Islamic terrorists worldwide. They are only following the example of their prophet, who was a looter, mass murderer, torturer, rapist, and a paedophile.

Muslim ..In post vedic era too the avatars or Brahmaa(not brahm),Vishnu,Mahesh are as equivalent to gurus who can impart salvation because of their unity with God.Also in HInduism God pervades in all including oall devi devatas, there is nothing which without his desire. That way their is only single unity exiting in everything, only thing is that devi, devatas, avatars act as guru and help you realize or achieve atonement faster with, Erlier people used to get pratyakh darshan of devi devtas now it is only accomplished seers who can do this.

No one can reach the depths of real Sanatan dharma. It requires a lot of focus and adherence to the values to realize the essence of Sanatan dharma

Quran allows raping infidel women…BEAUTIFUL WORDS FROM A GREAT MAN..
Following verses from Quran clearly shows that having sex with captive women is allowed in Islam. Islamic god allah provides such bounties to muslims as woould be provided by Don Corleoni as in some Italian mafia God father.

    023.005
    YUSUFALI: Who abstain from sex,
PICKTHAL: And who guard their modesty -
SHAKIR: And who guard their private parts,

    023.006
YUSUFALI: Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
PICKTHAL: Save from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,
SHAKIR: Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable,

And all married women are forbidden for you except the wives of disbelievers who come into your possession as bondwomen; this is Allah’s decree for you; and other than these, all women are lawful for you so that you seek them in exchange of your wealth in proper wedlock, not adultery; therefore give the women you wish to marry, their appointed bridal money; and after the appointment (of bridal money) there is no sin on you if you come to a mutual agreement; indeed Allah is All Knowing, Wise.

  36. Abhimanyu Dasgupta

    1. Banerjee challenged the Hindu hypothesis that Aurangzeb was anti-Hindu by reasoning that if the latter were truly guilty of such bigotry, how could he appoint a Hindu as his military commander-in-chief?

    2. “No one should accuse Aurangzeb of being communal minded. In his administration, the state policy was formulated by Hindus. Two Hindus held the highest position in the State Treasury. Some prejudiced Muslims even questioned the merit of his decision to appoint non-Muslims to such high offices. The Emperor refuted that by stating that he had been following the dictates of the Shariah (Islamic Law) which demands appointing right persons in right positions.

    3. During Aurangzeb’s long reign of fifty years, many Hindus, notably Jaswant Singh, Raja Rajrup, Kabir Singh, Arghanath Singh, Prem Dev Singh, Dilip Roy, and Rasik Lal Crory, held very high administrative positions.

DO YOU KNOW HINDI , IF NOT ,THEN SOMEBODY WILL TRANSLATE THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE FOR YOU,THEN YOU WILL CRY AFTER KNOWING THE CONDITION OF HINDUS DURING AURANGJEB REIGN.

Guys, following is the history (facts) written about Aurangzeb which I am just pasting it over here. The source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurangzeb

“The executions of the antinomian Sufi mystic Sarmad Kashani and the ninth Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur bear testimony to Aurangzeb’s religious intolerance: the former being beheaded on multiple accounts of heresy[b], the latter because he objected to Aurangzeb’s forced conversions.[27]
Another instance of Aurangzeb’s notoriety was his policy of temple destruction, for which figures vary wildly from 80 to 60,000.[28] Indian historian Harbans Mukhia wrote that “In the end, as recently recorded in Richard Eaton’s careful tabulation, some 80 temples were demolished between 1192 and 1760 (15 in Aurangzeb’s reign) and he compares this figure with the claim of 60,000 demolitions, advanced rather nonchalantly by ‘Hindu nationalist’ propagandists,’ although even in that camp professional historians are slightly more moderate.”[26] Among the Hindu temples he demolished were the three most sacred: the Kashi Vishwanath temple, Kesava Deo temple and Somnath temple. He built large mosques in their place.[26] In 1679, he ordered destruction of several prominent temples that had become associated with his enemies: these included the temples of Khandela, Udaipur, Chittor and Jodhpur”

    Also,

(Source for the following article is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurangzeb)
Early in Aurangzeb’s reign, various insurgent groups of Sikhs engaged Mughal troops in increasingly bloody battles. The ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, like his predecessors was opposed to conversion of the local population as he considered it wrong. Approached by Kashmiri Pandits to help them retain their faith and avoid forced religious conversions, Bahadur took on Aurangzeb. The emperor perceived the rising popularity of the guru as a threat to his sovereignty and in 1670 had him executed,[63][page needed] which infuriated the Sikhs. In response, Bahadur’s son and successor, Guru Gobind Singh, further militarized his followers, starting with the establishment of Khalsa in 1699, eight years before Aurangzeb’s death.

Conclusion : Aurangzeb was good for followers of Islam but not for HUMANITY.

He also appointed Mahadji Scindia as the Vakil e mutalik of the Mughal Emperor and awarded him the holy places of Mathura and Vrindavan. Agra fort was handed over to Scindia and a farman banning cow slaughter was proclaimed in the Mughal Empire.

The way both Mid-Eastern cults are designed, they are just so intolerant. Muslims have a habit of being too aggressive and hence are noticed easily. Their brethren, Christians, do it more sophisticatedly. For example how North East got converted to Christianity overwhelming with Nagaland demanding separation. Just think of it, in states where there is a majority of either of these two religions, those states demand separation.

Any philosophy which says that only I am right and you are wrong will always do anything and everything to remove the “non-believers” using any means possible. Evangelists, missionaries, Aurangzebs, Akbars, Ghaznis, Khangressis, Communists, etc all are just tools of that philosophy.

So it is imperative for us Hindus to unite to defeat this philosophy and save our country, our homeland.

A Sayyid who was an artisan by profession agreed with one Abdul Rasul to build a mosque at Banaras and accordingly the foundation was laid. Near the place there was a temple and many houses belonging to it were in the occupation of the Rajputs. The infidels decided that the construction of a mosque in the locality was not proper and that it should be razed to the ground. At night the walls of the mosque were found demolished. next day the wall was rebuilt but it was again destroyed. This happened three or four times. At last the Sayyid his himself in the corner. With the advent of night the infidels came to achieve their nefarious purpose. When Abdul Rasul gave the alarm, the infidels began to fight and the Sayyid was wounded by the Rajputs. In the meantime, the Musalman residents of the neighborhood arrived at the spot and the infidels took to their heels. The wounded muslims were taken to Shah Yasin who determined to vindicate the cause of Islam. When he came to the mosque, people collected from the neighborhood. the civil officers were outwardly inclined to side with the saint, but in reality they were afraid of the Royal displeasure on the account of the Raja, who was a courtier of the Emperor and had built the temple (near which the mosque was under construction). Shah Yasin, however, took up the sword and started for Jihad. The civil officers sent him a message that such a grave step should not be taken without the Emperor's permission. Shah Yasin, paying no heed, sallied forth till he reached Bazar Chau Khamba through a fusillade of stones …… THE DOORS (OF TEMPLES) WERE FORCED OPEN AND THE IDOLS THROWN DOWN. THE WEAVERS AND OTHER MUSALMANS DEMOLISHED ABOUT 500 TEMPLES. They desired to destroy the temple of Beni Madho, but as lanes were barricaded, they desisted from going further….

“And the Muslim who says he’s against Sharia, he’s not a Muslim. It’s impossible.”
“This community is a dirty, perverted community. We see that this community is breaking down, so we need to save this community like we saved it in Spain,” iMRAN said, referencing the Muslim invasion of Spain 1,300 years ago.

“We need to save this community and enlighten this community with Islam,” iMRAN told CBN News.

And Islam is flexing its muscle. Girls in bikinis have been attacked, and in some Muslim neighborhoods, Sharia law is enforced.

I must say he is misjudged personality, as he tried to build house upon sands. His reason of downfall was corrupt officials and Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur. The person who did not spent money from the treasury for his housekeeper, as the money is for welfare to the peoples. And scolded his son for not washing feet of his(son) teacher’s feet properly, which indicated his respect for the teacher.
I do respect the character of Shivaji but his way was not right. He was disrespected at Agra due to the proposal of Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur.

    http://adaniel.tripod.com/nonindian.htm

The largest religion of non-Indian origin is Islam. They are about 12% of India’s population. Muslims who arrived in India converted Indians to Islam. Islam was spread in India through two means, peaceful and sword. The first spreaders of Islam in India were individuals who saw in spreading Islam a holy precept. They used peaceful means to convert to Islam. But most of Indians are believed to have converted to Islam through the sword, which means the Muslim invaders gave the Indians an option to choose between death and Islam. The different Muslim rulers of India also brought into their kingdoms Muslim mercenaries, businessmen and slaves from different parts of the world like Russia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Arab countries and Africa. These people remained in India, married local Indians and converted them to Islam.

  50. Truth Will Prevail

Pratima, absolutely. Islam was first brought to India from Arabia in a peaceful way. The first converts were Arabian traders who landed on the shores of India. The second wave was through Sindh which wasn’t peaceful. The second wave was beaten back by the brave Rajputs and peace prevailed for a while. Then came wave after wave of barbarian Turks, Afghans and Mughals. Nothing peaceful all were done to plunder and convert the whole of India but they failed due to the fact that brave Kshatriyas kept on fighting. Shivaji was a true Kshatriya. He was even tolerant of his muslim subjects knowing clearly that there were Mughal barbarians committing atrocities on the Hindus and other Indians who couldn’t fight back. Patience and tolerance is what our ancestors taught us. We can’t become like the barbarians who tried to convert the whole of India into their fanatic false religion. I still believe that the peaceful muslims are the only ones who are loyal to India. The hateful and hypocritical Mullah types doesn’t belong in India. Backstabbing a country of their own birth and lineage is what these hateful kind does. They should learn a lot from the tolerance of Hindus, Buddhist, Sikhs and Jains. Dharmic religions tolerate even the most vile but the vile must be stopped before it spreads its vileness through vile conversions. The true victims of this fanaticism are the innocents. These remorseless human beings are taught to lie in the name of their Allah. I don’t think any sane God would tolerate such barbarism and insanity. Aurangzeb spent his last days fighting the Sikhs knowing that he already lost the battle. He got his initial beatings by Shivaji Maharaj. Some country and Dharam hating traiter Hindus were by his side but the fate of his hateful Empire was going towards doom.

  51. Truth Will Prevail

These people destroyed our ancient universities, Temples and many monuments. So many defenseless Hindus, Buddhists etc converted by the sword. Many Sikhs gave up their lives to protect India. I wish we had the most powerful Kshatriyas like the Pandavs living among us at that time. No only they would have beaten back these barbarians, they would’ve also entered the Islamic barbarians nest and put them in their place and they would’ve never ever dared to even dream of conquering our Father and Motherland India. These barbarians are the good examples of two different filthy genes mixing under the umbrella of fanaticism. Slave after slave were brought and sold like market goods and trained to become just like their masters to hate and convert. How could this be a religion? The world should be thankful that there are peaceful and sane people living in it.

  52. Truth Will Prevail

All Indians should thank the Marathas for their ultimate bravery. The list of brave Kings start from Maharaj Shivaji’s father Shahaji. They were brave and noble Kings born to one mother and one father. Their brave deeds should never be forgotten. Iron Pillars should be raised in their names. They loved Indians of all religions but they hated foreign barbarians who established and tried to establish themselves in India.

Gandhiji was peaceful but at the same time he was a confused human being. I don’t know why he supported the Khilafat. The man should’ve known that under the Khilafat there is nothing other than Islam and others will remain Dhimmi. I think Gandhi was out of his mind when he said that. All who hates India should leave. The only thing that is supposed to rule India is peace. We don’t need external religions, ideals or divise Islam to be peaceful. Sanatan Dharma itself is peaceful.

  58. Truth Will Prevail

Ye sab Arabon ki pakhanda hain. Un logon ke bhoomi mein mandir nahi ban sakta lekhi hamare bhoomi mein unki masjid hain. This is what people call hypocrisy. They build their mosques in our holy lands but we have no right to build our Temples in their land. This is a result of our tolerance as Hindus. No problem, we should make sure that our Hindustan will never get hurt once again. We can live without violence but if external forces get violent we will have to unite and defeat them. We must learn from our history. We never united, don’t know why. I can’t see India suffer like the past. India suffering is like a part of me being destroyed slowly. Lord Vishnu the preserver will keep all good things safe. I have full faith in him. Our Hindu dharam should be kept alive even during the worst times. All our Gods and Goddesses will be with us to encourage us to save India.

    1) All hindu be supportive to ramdev baba he is also one of the famous personalities who is fighting for hinduism give him full support ……..

In the past when one region of India got invaded, the Kshatriyas living in other parts of India didn’t reach them to help them. These people fought the battles alone and sacrificed their lives. We can’t let our brothers and sisters fight alone. This is how we got invaded. We can’t remain fearful or selfish. During the worst times we can’t live as seperate states anymore when we know we were born in the same land, Bharat. If King Bharat was alive today, he would’ve united the whole of India. There were many Kings in the past who all united India for the best. My main prayer is to see India live forever. I know we are living in Kali Yuga but we will go back to Satya Yuga once again. Our Gods will never betray us.

ya you are true ….!! absolutely true ..!! I agree with you completely …!!

We sholud follow what all shivaji maharaj followed foe his hindu spritual religion …!! and all our great fore fathers !! today people leaving our culture and traditions aside ,they are running after christianity ,getting degree of MBA,BBA,ICA etc and atlast getting nothing in hand ….!! People who all are dilse following hindu spritual reigion, they dont need any external degree or any external support apne devo ke dev baithe hai unko dene ke liye
better example is in front of our eyes ram dev baba ne kause degree our aur kaunse english padhayi ki thi jo billionaire hai aaj,he is only focused with hindu spritual sanatan dharam, aur apne devi devtaon ko prasan karke paise ki chaddar bhichate chale ja rahe hai …!! today and in future no one can compete him, the quality which he has….!! many foreign companies are jealous of him, bcoz people prefer using his product and yoga not only in india but also abroad and i will tell you even doctor are jealous of him…!! kyunki ramdev ka aasan aur pranayam karne se karne se doctor ke chakar lagane ki jarurat hi nahi padti … government is so bad that sachaayi toh usne chupa rakhi hai …!! pehle toh log sansrit padhte the aaj english bolna compulsory hogaya hai hindi ka namo nishaan khatam karne pe tule hai hamare dushman ….!! foreign countries se kitne missionairies they are doing mass conversion in poor back ward areas
now I will tell you china has become so powerful that foriegners are learning chinese language bcoz in china it is mandatory to follow chinese culture
and china is the country which goes to other country and does mass conversion for their religion buddhism …….!!
indirectly ramdev baba ko vardaan hi mil gaya by doing yoga kyun nahi muslims me koi paida hota hai ,aaj tak koi muslim country me paida hi nahi hua….!! they just know only one dusro ki behen betiyon par nazar dalna ,attyachaar karna ,mandiro ki jagaho pe masjid bana woh bhi logo mar pitkar ke …….!! do you know ram bhoomi aayodya me jab ladayi huyi thi tab thousands of hindu died ,mulayam singh ne aadesh de diya start firing all hindus ,approx 1 lakhs of hindu they died …… this mulayam singh yadav he supports only muslims just to get vote….. first is our hindu population should increase ,then there should one and only hindu government ruling india not the fucking congress …..!! indira gandhi ne jab ek muslimse shaadi ki tabhi ka tabhi hi use politics se nikal dena chaiye tha ,you know how much this congress supports muslims, you will not even imagine ,mandiro me jitna bhi paisa every month collect hota hai 60% of the total amount is given the madarsa and jo log haj karne jate hai ,pure india me jitne bhi registered mandir and pilgrimage hai total 60% amount every month they give to muslims for going haj to mecca…… why do they do this unke madarse se humko koi paisa aaj tak milA HAI KYA ,musalmaan toh dilse chahte hai ki hum hindu barbaad hojaye …..

  63. Pratima

Aaaj bhi hamare mandiron ka dhan musalmano ko diya jata hai ……..!!

    • Truth Will Prevail

Mandiron ka dhan sabko de rahan hai sickularism ke naam pe. Yeh sab rajanitik tantra hai votes lene ke liye. Young Indians in India should work hard and do good for India. Don’t be selfish or greedy. Never let the power of money corrupt your mind. Money will be there but keep it aside. Gupta Kings were traders by caste and they turned into Kshatriya to protect India. Till the end they fought the barbarian Hunas. Think for the best of Bharat as a whole. Because you have the right to be a first class citizen only in India, regardless of caste. When we can build ancient world famous universities in the past which helped us study a lot of fields we can still build good universities and give education to help our own people but political games must stop first.

Mulayam Singh Yadav is a confused old man bringing a bad name to the Yadav clan. He is the same person who claimed rapists should be forgiven because they are young? If he can’t save the women of his own country, he shouldn’t be in politics. He should retire.

You are right, doing Yoga in the corrrect way and eating good foods many diseases can be prevented and even healed. Swamiji follows the age old tradition of India. Most of our ancestors were healthy because they ate healthy foods. We as Hindus our bodies are genetically made to surive on pure vegetables and fruits because our ancestors depended on crops. Farming was given so much importance and now farmers are in trouble due to corrupt politics. Farmers are the future of India. Everyone should be jealous of our natural way to prevent diseases. Greedy people want diseases to be there because only that way they will make money. This is paap. No sane religion should tolerate this. This is why I am against corporate greed. Our children are much more healthier when they are active not behind tv or computers. Limit tv and computers. We need to make more Bollywood films related to the common man of India. Instead we are busy living in a dream entertainment. Pay attention to studies and physical activities. Our ancestors were physically active. Yoga is the best exercise on earth. Another natural exercise is doing physical jobs. Our common man works so hard. Our small shops should be protected from big business greed. Small shops belong to the common man. If we can’t save common man we shouldn’t be in politics or any positions of power. Our lands and forests should be protected from criminals. Hard work and determination will help our country. Work hard for yourself and the country. Don’t work hard to protect corporate greed. Gupta Kings were businessmen and traders but for them country was first. Backward places in India needs more education and jobs. In that way, no one will take advantage of the less educated. Also their tribal lands should be protected from greed. They will be thankful to us for helping them as true Hindus. Missionaries are interfering in their personal matters. We as Hindus should give them eduation and let them worship their own native Gods and culture which they hold dear. Once upon a time even my ancestors lived in the forests. Our Sages lived in the forest. Our Kings lived in the forest. Our ancient history is the forest. Shivaji Maharaj fought to see India free from oppression and corruption. Jai Bhavani ! Jai Shivaji !

Western culture and Hinduism has one thing in common, tolerance. Western Culture is not all the stupid things we see on tv. True Western Culture is contribution to Math, Science, Biology etc. I know that Freedom of Speech is respected in Western Culture. But in return we got invaded by people claiming to be Muslims, and Catholics. No sane Human being will tolerate the destruction of environment, animals etc. Human beings are nothing without Plants and Animals. Plants create carbon dioxide. Not only that both Plants and Animals keep our world beautiful. So many Animals were hunted down by Greed. Look at our Lions, only a few left in Gir Forest. We have 4 Lions facing 4 directions on our Emblem but we aren’t doing much to protect them. Not only Lions, all Animals and Plants deserve protection. Sorry I meant to say plants create Oxygen. They are our life support. If Humans destroy everything around them, then how will they survive? We can survive on Crops more than meat. We don’t have to kill all animals to survive. We can’t turn into Barbarians dependent only on meat and greed. Crops, fruits and vegetables are the best means to survive.

Okay now back to Aurangzeb. The bastard Turk had no right to be in India nor his ancestors the Mughals or Afghans. These people are the descendents of Persians, Scythian and Mongol mix. True bastards who can’t respect any nations. The low lives looked mixed in origin. Half Persian, Half Scythian, Huna, Half Mongol, and who knows even half Indian. These were the same breed of low lives who the Guptas were fighting hard to kick out of India.

  83. Truth Will Prevail

The entry of the Mughal barbarians into India happened during a time of betrayal and instablity. The enslaved Afghan and Turk mix Sultanates were ruling Delhi and the Rajputs were fighting constant battles against them. Sangram Singh a true Rajput was the last hope for Nothern India’s freedom. He brought some Rajputs together never knowing that there was a Tomar Rajput fraud betrayer in between, a traitor named Silhadi. Silhadi in the end realized his mistake when the same Mughals whom he supported came to destroy him. He died like a helpless coward. Silhadi’s cowardice and betrayel can be compared to the many kanjars who betrayed his land during battles against foreign barbarians of any kind. Sangram Singh a descendant of the house of Lord Ram made sure his country remained free but Silhadi a mercinary coward betrayed him. Mercinary low lives and oppurtunists weren’t true Rajputs or Kshatriyas who kept their word.

  84. Truth Will Prevail

When these stupid Pakis and Afghans make fun of our dark skin, they forget that they are the descendants of enslaved Persians, Arabs, Afghans, Turks, and Mongols. Our dark skin is native to India also known as Bharat. We don’t have their white skin or colored eyes but we know what we are, Hindu by lineage. Dark skin and dark eyes are the most dominant of all colors. Be proud of it. No make up or plastic surgery can change it.

When Islam arrived in India, the Hindus welcomed the Muslims with open arms as brothers. In return Islam destroyed the entire Hindu civilisation.
Over ten centuries the dirty Muslim rogues murdered an estimated 100 million people. It has been said by historians and scholars (both eastern and western) that this is the largest genocide the world has ever witnessed. Muslim religious leaders “educated” Muslim men to rape Hindu women as this was a method to destroy the Hindu progency. Soon raping Hindu women was part of what being a Muslim man was about! Temples were razed to the ground and villages were burned. Those who refused to convert to islam were either murdered (the menfolk) or raped (the womenfolk). All the slutty Mughal leaders made it their goal to wipe Hinduism from the map of the earth! They even openly stated it.
Really going through all this tears in my eyes…..!!

They are the same version of Asuras and Rakshas but even some Asuras had standards and decency. The barbarians who harmed India for centuries thought they will go to heaven by doing so. They are in their own narak suffering. We should make sure that this will never happen again. Our Kshatriyas fought them off but I wish our most powerful Kshatriyas and our Gods showed up during that time. When Gods intervene all Human Rakshas will flee like true cowards and never ever dream of becoming violent again. We were and we still are living in Kali Yuga. Kali Yuga is the reason why all these bad things happened in the past. We mourn because these are our people who were killed through genocides and even forced into their filthy religion. No only Hindus, they even killed our Buddhist, Sikh brothers and sisters. I never saw Buddhists and Sikhs as different. They are from India, all followers of Dharmic religions which believe in peace not brainwashing or forced conversion. So no sane religion would tolerate such atrocities in the name of any God.

  88. Satyameva Jayate

Before Islam arrived when wars were fought, they were fought on the battle field keeping women and children away from harm. We followed a Kshatriya code of Dharm but these barbarians have no code or morality. They were crazy and weak human beings. They didn’t even respect their own women. Kept them enslaved in Harems. Sick people. The rapes which takes place in India reminds me of them. These rapists deserve death. We could’ve advanced in all areas of learning but because of these barbarians constant wars were fought and there was no time for peace or advancement. Universities and learning centers were destroyed. These Mlecchas are the descendants of the same kind who interfered in Vedic Ceremonies and caused trouble. They are filled with jealousy.

  89. Satyameva Jayate

The Gupta Empire was a time when we were advanced in many fields. Then when the irreligious and uneducated Hunas nomads showed up, things changed for the worst. Then came Islam and that was the end of peace. These external barbarians didn’t come to save India. They came to do the opposite. No respect for culture, or morality. They say they believe in God. They don’t believe in God. They believe in some Evil force.

You muslims say your religion is a religion of peace. But your religion teaches Muslims that non-Muslims are infidels and that they should be killed. It also teaches them that women who do not “obey” their husbands must be beaten. Most of the terrorist organisations are Muslim. Muslims are renowned as mass murderers and terrorists. Moreover the highest religious leaders in your religion themselves use religious doctrine to justify killings so please do not say that Islam is a religion of peace.

And you all talk crap about Palestine and Kashmir. Indians are doing nothing wrong in Kashmir. Kashmir is, was and always will be part of India. Do you even know what the history is behind Kashmir? When India and Pakistan were becoming independent, the leaders of all the states that border what was to become India and Pakistan were offered a choice of whether to become part of Pakistan or part of India. Kashmir had a Muslim population but a Hindu prince, and he wanted to be part of India. It was your beloved Muslim country Pakistan that actually started this whole dispute by attacking India.

  93. Pratima

At first the Kashmiri Muslims had no problem with becoming part of India. So please check your sources out! And you are quick to say that Kashmiris are oppressed and that they are being killed, but how conveniently do you leave out all the Hindus that were slaughtered in Kashmir in order to tilt the demographic favour towards the Muslims. There are hardly any Hindus now in Kashmir because they have all been killed by your Islamics. It is ok for Kasmiri Muslims to muder and wound hundreds of innocent Hindus every year in terrorist attacks but the moment that the Indian army tries to defend its citizens and crack down on the terrorists we are accused of “oppression” and human rights violations.

Hindus were under oppression from Muslims for ten centuries. In their own country they were treated as second class citizens. The British gave the Hindus their self-respect back. Under the British, Hindus thrived. They felt that finally they were living in their own country again. So why shouldn’t they have co-operated with the British???

It makes me sick when I hear when these people justifying terrorism by saying that you are oppressed. Look at South Americans, Look at Africans look at East Europeans. These people have faced much more hardship than you people have yet I do not see them producing terrorist organisations. And anyway, for the all the “Muslim brotherhood” rhetoric and nonsense that I constantly hear about, why aren’t all the rich, oil owning fat Arabic sheikhs helping their impoverished Muslims out? Clearly they have MUCH MUCH MUCH more than enough capital to ensure decent living standards in Palestine. The problem isn’t oppression. The problem is ISLAM.

    To hell with Islam!”

its true that islam cruel and barbaric, how can this religion educate people when its founder was an illiterate person , a person with records of killings, raping etc etc.Its a common practice in Islam that either you accept islam or die…..why , no other religion supports this,,, secondly only multiplying like cats and dogs doesnt mean that they will rule this world if that would be then india would have been an islamic country long before. You can see that most of the muslim country are weak, they are poor, they dont have a stable economy, they have lack of education, they only know to fight …. for what. Just think how can you rule this world when the most powerful nations are non-muslims. Its time when muslims must think twice about their faith, how can you marry your own sister….how can you rape another women in the name of religion there are number of such incidents that will explain that this is the religion most hated by non-muslims.

Please all dear hindu Read this carefully and whole heartedly, and just ask yourself is not our hindu sanatan dharam true with full proof…

Mira was born around the start of the 16th Century in the Chaukari village in Merta, Rajasthan. Her father was Ratan Singh a descendent of Rao Rathor, the founder of Jodhpur. When Mirabai was only 3 years old, a wandering Sadhu came to her family’s home and gave a doll of Sri Krishna to her father. Her father took this is as a special blessing, but was initially unwilling to give it to her daughter, because she felt she would not appreciate it. However Mira had, at first sight, become deeply enamoured with this doll. She refused to eat until the doll of Sri Krishna was given to her. To Mira, this figure of Sri Krishna, embodied his living presence. She resolved to make Krishna her lifelong friend, lover, and husband. Throughout her turbulent life she never wavered from her youthful commitment.

On one occasion when Mira was still young she saw a wedding procession going down the street. Turning to her mother she asked in innocence, “Who will be my husband?” Her mother replied, half in jest, half in seriousness. “You already have your husband, Sri Krishna.” Mira’s mother was supportive of her daughter’s blossoming religious tendencies, but she passed away when she was only young.
At an early age Mira’s father arranged for her to be married to Prince Bhoj Raj, who was the eldest son of Rana Sanga of Chittor. They were an influential Hindu family and the marriage significantly elevated Mira’s social position. However Mira was not enamoured of the luxuries of the palace. She served her husband dutifully, but in the evening she would spend her time in devotion and singing to her beloved Sri Krishna. Whilst singing devotional bhajans, she would frequently lose awareness of the world, entering into states of ecstasy and trance.

    Go to that impenetrable realm
That death himself trembles to look upon.
There plays the fountain of love
With swans sporting on its waters.

    (1) Go To That Impenetrable Realm

    Conflict with Family
However her new family did not approve of her piety and devotion to Krishna. To make things worse Mira refused to worship their family deity Durga. She said she had already committed herself to Sri Krishna. Her family became increasingly disproving of her actions, but the fame and saintly reputation of Mirabai spread throughout the region. Often she would spend time discussing spiritual issues with Sadhus and people would join in the singing of her bhajans. However this just made her family even more jealous. Mira’s sister-in-law Udabai started to spread false gossip and defamatory remarks about Mirabai. She said Mira was entertaining men in her room. Her husband, believing these stories to be true, tore into her room with sword in hand. However he saw Mira only playing with a doll. No man was there at all. Yet throughout these hysterical slanders Mirabai remained unmoved by both the criticism and praise of the world.

    This infamy, O my Prince
    is delicious!
    Some revile me,
    others applaud,
I simply follow my incomprehensible road
    A razor thin path
but you meet some good people,
A terrible path but you hear a true word
    Turn back?
Because the wretched stare and see nothing?
O Mira’s Lord is noble and dark,
    and slanderers
    rake only themselves
    over the coals

    Mirabai and Akbar
Mira’s fame spread far and wide her devotional bhajans were sung across northern India. It is said that the fame and spirituality of Mirabai reached the ears of the Moghul Emperor Akbar. Akbar was tremendously powerful, but he was also very interested in different religious paths. The problem was that he and Mirabai’s family were the worst enemies; to visit Mirabai would cause problems for both him and Mirabai. But Akbar was determined to see Mirabai, the Princess – Saint. Disguised in the clothes of beggars he travelled with Tansen to visit Mirabai. Akbar was so enamoured of her soulful music and devotional singing, that he placed at her feet a priceless necklace before leaving. However in the course of time Akbar’s visit came to the ears of her husband Bhoj Raj. He was furious that a Muslim and his own arch enemy and set eyes upon his wife. He ordered Mirabai to commit suicide by drowning in a river. Mirabai intended to honour her husbands command, but as she was entering the river Sri Krishna appeared to her and commanded her to leave for Brindaban where she could worship him in peace. So with a few followers, Mirabai left for Brindaban, where she spent her time in devotion to Sri Krishna. After a while her husband became repentant, feeling that her wife was actually a real saint. Thus he travelled to Brindaban and requested her to return. Mirabai agreed, much to the displeasure of the rest of her family.

However soon after Mira’s husband died;( fighting in battles with the Moghul emperors). This made the situation even worse for Mirabai. Her father in law, Rana Sanga, saw her husband’s death as a way to be rid of Mirabai. He commanded her to commit Sati. However Mirabai, with the inner direct assurance of her beloved Sri Krishna, said that she would not do this. Her real husband, Sri Krishna had not died. She would later say in her poetry.

“sati na hosyan girdhar gansyan mhara man moho ghananami”,

“I will not commit sati. I will sing the songs of Girdhar Krishna, and will not become sati because my heart is enamoured of Hari.”(3)

After this experience her family continued to torture her. They restricted her movements and sought to make her life as uncomfortable as possible. Yet in the face of all these trials and tribulation she remained detached from her physical suffering. There was nothing that could disturb her inner connection to Giridhara (epithet of Sri Krishna as young cowherd boy). It is said that twice her family tried to kill her, once through a venomous snake and once through poisonous drink. On both occasions it is said Mirabai, protected by the Grace of Sri Krishna, came to no ill harm.

    Mirabai in Brindaban
However the relentless torments and hostility interfered with her life of devotion and contemplation on Krishna. She sought the advice of learned men and Saints. They advised her to leave the palace and return to Brindaban. Secretly with some followers she slipped out of the palace and escaped to the holy city of Brindaban. In Brindaban Mirabai was free to worship Giridhara to her heart’s content. She would spend her time in singing bhajans and in ecstatic communion with Krishna. Like a true Bhakti she worshipped God wholeheartedly. The riches of the world offered no attraction to Mirabai; her only satisfaction came from her single minded devotion to Sri Krishna. Her soul was ever yearning for Krishna. She considered herself to be a Gopi of Vrindaban, mad only with pure love for Krishna.

    I am mad with love
And no one understands my plight.
    Only the wounded
Understand the agonies of the wounded,
When the fire rages in the heart.
Only the jeweller knows the value of the jewel,
Not the one who lets it go.
In pain I wander from door to door,
But could not find a doctor.
    Says Mira: Harken, my Master,
    Mira’s pain will subside
When Shyam comes as the doctor.

    (4) I am Mad

Her devotion and spiritual magnetism were infectious. She inspired many to follow the path of Vaishnavism. As Swami Sivananda stated:

“Mira wafted the fragrance of devotion far and wide. Those who came in contact with her were affected by her strong current of Prem. Mira was like Lord Gauranga. She was an embodiment of love and innocence. Her heart was the temple of devotion. Her face was the lotus-flower of Prem. There was kindness in her look, love in her talk, joy in her discourses, power in her speech and fervour in her songs.” (5)

Even learned Sadhus would come to her for inspiration. There is a story of one respected Spiritual Master, who refused to speak to Mirabai because she was a woman. Mirabai replied there was only 1 real man in Brindaban, Sri Krishna; everyone else was a Gopi of Krishna. On hearing this the Spiritual teacher accepted the wisdom of Mirabai and agreed to talk to her. Later Mirabai would become his student.

    Poems of Mirabai
Much of what we know about Mirabai comes from her poetry. Her poetry express the longing and seeking of her soul for union with Sri Krishna. At time she expresses the pain of separation and at other times the ecstasy of divine union. Her devotional poems were designed to be sung as bhajans and many are still sung today.

“Mira’s songs infuse faith, courage, devotion and love of God in the minds of the readers. They inspire the aspirants to take to the path of devotion and they produce in them a marvelous thrill and a melting of the heart.” (6)

Mirabai was a devotee of the highest order. She was immune to the criticism and suffering of the world. She was born a princess but forsook the pleasures of a palace for begging on the streets of Brindaban. She lived during a time of war and spiritual decline, but her life offered a shining example of the purest devotion. Many were inspired by her infectious devotion and spontaneous love for Sri Krishna. Mirabai showed how a seeker could attain union with God, only through love. Her only message was that Krishna was her all.

My Beloved dwells in my heart,
I have actually seen that Abode of Joy.
Mira’s Lord is Hari, the Indestructible.
My Lord, I have taken refuge with Thee,
    Thy slave.

    (7) That Dark Dweller

It is said in her death she melted into the heart of Krishna. Tradition relates how one day she was singing in a temple, when Sri Krishna appeared in his subtle form. Sri Krishna was so pleased with his dearest devotee. He opened up his heart centre and Mirabai entered leaving her body whilst in the highest state of Krishna consciousness

  99. Pratima

Mirabai was a devotee of the high, higher, highest order. Among the saints of India, she is absolutely unparalleled. She composed many, many bhajans, which are prayerful songs to God. Each song Mirabai wrote expressed her inspiration, aspiration and sleepless self-giving” (9)

Countries in which they are a minority. Each inbred muslim is having at least 4 children per wife ,like wise they have atleast 2-3 wife childrens multiplied x4 = 12 childrens per man ,now with a purpose of creating an army. We must do something about this. We must unite and stop muslim immigration into non-muslim majority countries. Muslim immigration to western countries has spread rapidly, and during the same period we have seen an increase in crimes in these countries – they do not want to adjust or be part of the local culture. Instead they teach extremist views by circulating islamic propaganda. We are seeing homegrown terrorists. Therefore, we must stop sending aid to muslim countries and put these funds into useful programs such as defence.

    GODHRA: THE TRUE STORY
    Nicole E
Godhra, a city of the Indian State of Gujarat, was the lead story in all Indian newspapers on February 27th-28th, 2002. A shattering piece of news: 58 Hindu pilgrims had been burned alive in a train. “57 die in ghastly attack on train” ran the Times of India’s headline; “Mob targets Ramsevaks [Devotees of Rama] returning from Ayodhya”; “58 killed in attack on train with Karsevaks [volunteers]” (The Indian Express); “1500-strong mob butcher 57 Ramsevaks on Sabarmati Express” (The Asian Age). But the BBC’s announcement had a very different tone: “58 Hindu ‘extremists’ burned to death” … or Agence France Press on March 2nd: “A train full of Hindu ‘extremists’ was burnt.”
A deluge of anguished news followed about a “Muslim genocide”: “Mass killings of Muslims in reprisal riots” (NYT, March 5th), “The authorities … share the prejudices of the Hindu gangs who have been busy pulping their Muslim neighbours” (The Observer, March 4th). We were told that Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, intended to eradicate Muslims from the State — more than 9% of Gujarat’s population, in other words five million people. We read that the police was conniving in the mass slaughter and did nothing to prevent it. Narendra Modi was compared to Hitler, or Nero. We shuddered reading the reports describing rapes and various horrors, supposedly inflicted on Muslims by Hindus.
Today, six years later, with the noises and cries of the wounds having fallen silent, what emerges from those events? What are the facts?
At 7:43 A.M. on February 27th, 2002, the Sabarmati Express rolled into the Godhra station, fortunately with a four-hour delay, in broad daylight. This train transported more than 2,000 people, mainly karsewaks on their way back to Ahmedabad after participating in the Poorna Ahuti Yagya at Ayodhya, a ritual at the traditional birthplace of Rama.
As it pulled out of the station, the train was pelted with stones and bricks, and passengers from several bogeys were forced to bring down their windows to protect themselves. Someone pulled the emergency chain: the train came to a halt about 100 metres away from the platform, surrounded by a large crowd of Muslims. The railway police managed to disperse the crowd, and the train resumed its journey.
Within minutes, the emergency chain was simultaneously pulled again, from several coaches. It halted at about 700 metres from the station. A crowd of over 1,000 surrounded the train, pelting it with bricks, stones, then burning missiles and acid bulbs, especially on the S-5, S-6 and S-7 coaches.
The vacuum pipe between coaches S-6 and S-7 was cut, thereby preventing any further movement of the train. The doors were locked from outside. A fire started in coach S-7, which the passengers were able to extinguish. But the attack intensified and coach S-6 caught fire and minutes later, was in flames. Passengers who managed to get out of the burning compartment were attacked with sharp weapons, and stoned. They received serious injuries, some were killed. Others got out through the windows and took shelter below the coach.
Fifty eight pilgrims were burned alive, including twenty-seven women and ten children. The whole attack lasted 20-25 minutes.[1]
What transpired then, in the Indian press? Let’s imagine a coach of French pilgrims coming back from Lourdes, burned alive.
Strangely, instead of clearly, straightforwardly condemning the act, the Indian English-language press tried to justify it: “Pilgrims provoked by chanting pro-Hindu slogans” (they were not slogans but bhajans, or devotional songs, ending with “Jai Sri Ram” (Victory to Sri Rama). “It’s because they were returning from Ayodhya, where they asked for the reconstruction of a temple at the traditional birth place of Rama; this offends the feelings of the Muslims.” In sum, the victims, roasted alive, were guilty.

    The Anger
Numb with shock, the people of Gujarat did not react straightaway. They remained calm at first. Till that afternoon, when the charred bodies started arriving at their respective families — with no comforting voice sounded, either from the government, or from the media, no condemnation for this barbaric act, but an indifferent, deafening silence — then these people known for their non-violent nature and exceptional patience, burst into a frenzy.
There was a revolt in the whole of Gujarat. For three days, tens of thousands of enraged Hindus set fire to Muslim shops, houses, vehicles: They came out from all sides, all parties, all classes, uncontrollable — one cannot control a revolution (except in China maybe). The fatalities: 720 Muslims, 250 Hindus, according to official figures.
We read all over about a “genocide of Muslims.” Do we remember a single report on the Hindus who heroically helped save Muslims in their neighbourhood? Was even one family of Hindu victims interviewed following the criminal burning of the Sabarmati Express? One fourth of the dead in the ensuing riots were Hindus. How to classify those 250 victims? Who evoked the dead on the Hindu side? According to reports, Congress Party councillor Taufeeq Khan Pathan and his son Zulfi, notorious gangsters, were allegedly seen leading Muslim rioters. Another such character, Congress member of the Godhra Nagarpalika [municipality], Haji Balal, was said to have had the fire-fighting vehicle sabotaged beforehand.[2] Then,

he stopped the vehicle on its way to the Godhra Station and did not allow it to proceed any further. A man stood in front of the vehicle, the mob started pelting stones, … The
headlights and the windowpanes of the vehicle got damaged … Fearing for his own and his crew’s life, the driver drove the vehicle through the mob, as it was not possible to move backwards. The mob gave in but 15-20 precious minutes had been lost.[3]
Lost for a coach full of innocent people in flames.
Which newspaper article stated that the most violent events took place following provocations by leaders of this sort? The Union Home Ministry’s Annual Report of 2002-03 stated that 40,000 Hindus were in riot relief camps. What made those 40,000 Hindus rush to relief camps? To seek protection from whom? Why was it necessary if they were the main aggressors?
More than the barbaric event itself, it is the insensitivity of the Indian “elite” and of the media that infuriated the Gujaratis.
Those accused of terrorism often receive political support, are benevolently portrayed by the media, and a host of “human rights” organisations are always on hand to fight for them. But those victims whose life is cut down for no reason, are they not “human” enough to get some rights too? The great majority of those who took to revolt in Gujarat were neither rich nor particularly intellectual — neither right nor left: they were middle- and lower-class Gujaratis, simple people, workers, also tribals. But some from the upper middle class, among them a lot of women, took part in the upheaval.

    The media sources
Apart from local journalists usually more objective in their reports, no English media reporter, thought it worthwhile to look deeper into the events at the Godhra railway station. Nobody came to question possible survivors of the tragedy. Is a coach of Hindu pilgrims even worth the trip? They had to wait for the “elite” to react; they had to receive directives from the politically correct, before taking their pens. Worse, they reported deliberate rumours and made up versions as actual news.
We were told, for instance, that when some pilgrims got off the ill-fated coaches to have tea, “some altercation took place” between them, and a Muslim tea vendor: “They argued with the old man on purpose,” wrote some newspapers; “they refused to pay for their tea” (though Gujarati honesty is well known); “they pulled his beard and beat him up … They kept shouting ‘Mandir ka nirmaan karo, Babar ki aulad ko bahar karo’ (start building the temple and throw out the sons of Babar). Hearing the chaos, the tea vendor’s 16-year-old daughter came forward and tried to save her father from the karsevaks. She kept pleading and begging them to leave him alone. The karsevaks, according to this version, then seized the girl, took her inside their compartment and closed the door. The old man kept banging on the door and pleaded for his daughter. Then two stall vendors jumped into the last bogey, pulled the chain, and put the bogey on fire.”
But would they have been stupid enough to set fire to the coach where their colleague’s young daughter was being held? And why were 2,000 Muslims assembled there at 7 A.M. with jerry-cans of petrol bought the previous evening?
Rajeev Srinivasan, an American journalist of Indian origin, was e-mailed this anonymous report a dozen times, supposedly written by Anil Soni, Press Trust of India reporter. He contacted Anil Soni to check on the veracity of this account. Soni answered:

Some enemy of mine has done this to make life difficult for me, do you understand, sir? I did not write this at all. I am a PTI correspondent. Yes, that is my phone number, but it is not my writing.
Anil Soni apparently had heard about it from hundreds of people, and was upset to see a false report circulated in his name.
Inquiries with the Railway Staff and passengers travelling in the Sabarmati Express showed that: no quarrel whatsoever took place on the platform between a tea vendor and pilgrims, and no girl was manhandled nor kidnapped.
As the Nanavati Report established later, this fictitious report was in fact circulated by the Jamiat-Ulma-E-Hind, the very hand responsible for the carnage.[4] It nevertheless went around the world, exhibited as “the true story.” Aren’t we compelled to conclude that the assailants, in India, are those who dictate what’s “politically correct,” and instruct the media?

    Arson and Canards
On the afternoon of February 28th, Gujarati Hindus’ revolt broke out. A few journalists then booked their tickets for Gujarat. As far as we can see, they had a framework in place: the outbreak would be dealt with independently of the Godhra carnage, as a different, unrelated subject; it was a planned violence perpetrated by “fundamentalist” Hindus against Gujarat’s Muslims, fully backed by the State of Gujarat. From this day on, the burning of coach S-6 was to be left behind, forgotten.
On February 28th evening, Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced his decision to deploy the Army, and the next day, March 1st, by 11 A.M. the actual deployment of troops at sensitive points had begun. Violence abated in most major cities, after their arrival with orders to shoot on sight. But security forces were largely outnumbered by the angry flood of people, spreading for the first time like rivers in spate, to rural areas and villages. Apprehending the seriousness of the situation, Narendra Modi had made a request for security personnel from neighbouring States of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab. This request was turned down by each State. Why did no one report this fateful refusal?
That same day (1st March), at the peak of the turmoil, the National Human Rights Commission faxed a notice to the Gujarat Government, calling for a report within three days on the measures being taken … “to prevent any further escalation of the situation in the State of Gujarat which is resulting in continued violation of human rights of the people.”[5] But it was silent on what had led to such a situation in the first place.
One major event which received a great deal of attention from the media was the conflagration at the Gulbarg Society in Ahmedabad, home of a former Member of Parliament, Ehsan Jaffri. This man, rather refined and usually respected, did not feel threatened. But on February 28th morning, a crowd surrounded his house, in which a number of Muslims had taken refuge. Jaffri made a number of panic-stricken phone calls for help to authorities and to his colleagues, journalists and friends. The crowd was growing … (from 200 to 20,000, figures vary in the reports). The Indian Express (March 1st, 2002), as well as police records, reported that “eventually, in panic, he fired at the 5,000-strong mob … 2 were killed and 13 injured … That incensed the mob …” which at 1:30 P.M. set the bungalow ablaze by exploding a gas cylinder. Final toll: 42 (March 11th edition).
Human Rights Watch, an NGO based in New York, published a dossier (on April 30th, 2002) about the Gujarat events which caused a sensation and fed a large number of articles in the international press.
In this report, Smita Narula had an unnamed “witness” at hand, to relate the attack on Jaffri’s house. First “a 200 to 500-strong mob threw stones; refugees in the house (also 200-250 people — sic!) also threw stones in self-defence.” Then the crowd set the place on fire at about 1:30 P.M. Our witness then jumped from the third floor where he was hiding — and from where he had been observing in minute detail all that was going on in the ground floor, even the theft of jewels (it would seem the floors between the third and the ground floor were transparent). At that point we jump into the sensational. Narula’s witness sees that “four or five girls were raped, cut, and burned …; two married women were also raped and cut. Some on the hand, some on the neck” …; “Sixty-five to seventy people were killed.” Those rapes and hackings are said to have started at 3:30 P.M. … when the house was already on fire. Was the mob waiting for everything to be reduced to cinders to commit its crimes?
Among the most morbid canards, the novelist Arundhati Roy’s vitriolic article (Outlook magazine, May 6th, 2002). She describes the event which precedes Ehsan Jaffri’s death (extract):

… A mob surrounded the house of former Congress MP Iqbal Ehsan Jaffri. His phone calls to the Director-General of Police, the Police Commissioner, the Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) were ignored. The mobile police vans around his house did not intervene. The mob broke into the house. They stripped his daughters and burned them alive. Then they beheaded Ehsan Jaffri and dismembered him …
Wait a minute. Jaffri was burned alive in the house, true — is it not awful enough? Along with some other 41 people. Not enough? But his daughters were neither “stripped” nor “burnt alive.” T. A. Jafri, his son, in a front-page interview titled “Nobody knew my father’s house was the target” (Asian Age, May 2nd, Delhi ed.), felt obliged to rectify:

Among my brothers and sisters, I am the only one living in India. And I am the eldest in the family. My sister and brother live in the US. I am 40 years old and I have been born and brought up in Ahmedabad.
There we are, reassured as regards Ehsan Jaffri’s children. He had only one daughter, who was living abroad. No one was raped in the course of this tragedy, and no evidence was given to the police to that effect.
The Gujarat Government sued Outlook magazine. In its May 27th issue, Outlook published an apology to save its face. But in the course of its apology, the magazine’s editors quoted a “clarification” from Roy, who withdrew her lie by planting an even bigger one: the MP’s daughters “were not among the 10 women who were raped and killed in Chamanpura that day”! From Smita Narula to Arundhati Roy, “four or five girls” had swollen to “ten women,” equally anonymous and elusive.
    Roy begins theatrically:

Last night a friend from Baroda called. Weeping. It took her fifteen minutes to tell me what the matter was. It wasn’t very complicated. Only that Sayeeda, a friend of hers, had been caught by a mob. Only that her stomach had been ripped open and stuffed with burning rags. Only that after she died, someone carved ‘OM’ on her forehead.
Balbir Punj, Rajya Sabha MP and journalist, shocked by this “despicable incident” which allegedly occurred in Baroda, decided to investigate it. He got in touch with the Gujarat government.

The police investigations revealed that no such case, involving someone called Sayeeda, had been reported either in urban or rural Baroda. Subsequently, the police sought Roy’s help to identify the victim and seek access to witnesses who could lead them to those guilty of this crime. But the police got no cooperation. Instead, Roy, through her lawyer, replied that the police had no power to issue summons.[6]
This redefines the term “fiction writer.”
Another story about a “pregnant Muslim woman” whose stomach was allegedly “ripped open,” her “foetus taken out” and both being burnt, horrified people all over the world. The first mention of it seems to be in a BBC report around March 6th, which, though “uncorroborated,” spread like wildfire, with fresh details (divergent and varied, but who cares?), so much so that you end up feeling there is no smoke without fire. The rumour was never confirmed — which twisted tongue first whispered it?
Press articles kept quoting one another, creating “dossiers” out of floating rumours. None of the authors even deigned to visit the scene of the alleged events; none except the official inquiry commissions, had the honesty to question fairly, in parallel, the involved Hindu families regarding the tragedy unfolding in the two Gujarati communities.

    Onlookers get caught
On March 1st, 2002, in a village on the outskirt of Vadodara (Baroda), the “Best Bakery” was set on fire: fourteen persons were burnt alive (nine Muslims and three Hindus). This particular incident made much ink flow, since the prime witness, young Zaheera Habibullah Sheikh, aged 19, turned against the prosecution in favour of the accused in the trial court.
Though Zaheera lost several family members in the tragedy, on May 17th, 2003, in the Vadodara High Court, she testified that the accused persons in the dock were innocent and had nothing to do with the arson. She, as well as the other witnesses, did not recognize their own alleged statements before the police.

Justice Mahida of the High Court observed that:

    1) There has been an inexcusable delay in the First Information Report (FIR). The so-called FIR of Zahiribibi (Zaheera) was sent to the Magistrate after four to five days. So there is every reason to believe that factually this FIR was cropped up afterwards in the manner suitable to the police.
    2) The arrested persons had nothing to do with the incident.
“We all knew these accused persons and because of them, our lives are saved,” reported Lal Mohammed Shaikh, a witness before the court. … “There were cordial relations between my family members, the persons residing in the compound of Best Bakery and all the accused persons before the court … The 65 persons who are saved in this incident are all before the Court and all these were saved by and due to the accused and their family members … These persons had called us, in darkness we silently came out of our house, and they saved our lives.”
    3) The police is trying to put as accused passers-by at the place of incident, innocent persons gathering there or persons residing in the neighbourhood (in confidence that the police wouldn’t do anything to them).
    4) No legal or acceptable evidence at all is produced by the prosecution against the accused involving them in this incident. In this case, … it has come out during the trial … that false evidences were cropped up against the present accused to involve them in this case. The case … is not proved and hence the accused are acquitted [7].
On June 27th, 2003, the twenty-one defendants were freed, and Zaheera Sheikh felt the court has given her “all the justice she wanted.”

In the interests of a community
But all were not satisfied. A former Chief Justice of India, A.S. Anand, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission decided that the Vadodara judgement was a “miscarriage of justice” and the twenty-one “not-guilty” people were actually guilty and therefore should be punished. Now this honourable person should have been aware that seated in Delhi at the helm of this “human rights” affair, he would have been the first target of a number of dubious NGOs with vested political interests. Strangely, Justice Anand did not even consider it important to send his own team of independent inquiry before questioning the judgment of another court of law.[8]
Consequently, just after the fast-track court acquittals, three members of Zaheera’s community “barged into her home” around midnight, and told her she would have to change her statement “in the interests of the community.”
This meant that Zaheera had to declare that she had lied to the court (which is a criminal offence [9]). Did she have a choice?
Along with her mother and brother, she was taken to Mumbai “without their consent,” and brought to Teesta Setalvad,[10] an activist of the much-vaunted “human rights.” The activist took them under her wing for several months, accommodated them in a rented apartment while providing assistance for a living. In the meantime she prepared affidavits (in English which Zaheera does not read) for the girl to sign before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in which she “confessed” to having lied to the Vadodara trial court, “trembling with fear and threatened” by BJP MLA Madhu Shrivastav (who had nothing to do with her area and whom she did not even know). And Zaheera now designated as guilty, the twenty-one people she had considered innocent. All media were ready with their cameras, mikes and pens to splash the news.
The Gujarat High Court dismissed the appeal, rightly suspecting that the witness had been pressured to turn hostile, and upheld the acquittals.
But the Supreme Court accepted the retraction and, as demanded by NHRC and Setalvad, ordered the retrial of the case outside Gujarat. The acquittal of the twenty-one people was quashed. In 2004, Zaheera “managed to flee” from her confinement by the activist, and in November, seized by remorse for having allowed innocent people to be accused, stated that whatever she had told the Supreme Court, was done under duress from Teesta Setalvad and her associate Rais Khan; and whatever she told the NHRC was a lie. “Ramzan is on and I want to state the truth,” she said. “What I had said in Vadodara Court during the trial was my true statement. The judgement was correct and had given me all the justice I wanted.” She sought police protection from Teesta Setalvad.[11]
The Supreme Court judge called the girl “flip-flop Zaheera,” accepted a “high-powered committee” report which indicted Zaheera Sheikh as a “self-condemned liar,” and awarded the girl with a simple one-year imprisonment for contempt of court, as well as a fine of Rs. 50,000. Activist Teesta Setalvad was cleared.
Now, who took the court for a ride? Especially in light of the new revelation that “a host of Gujarat riot case victims were misled into signing affidavits giving false information,” for which as many as ten of them had received 100,000 rupees from Teesta Setalvad NGO.[12]
As it stands today, nine persons among the twenty-one passer-bys picked up, have been condemned to life imprisonment and are languishing in jail.
In December 2004, a fatwa was issued against Zaheera by the Muslim Tayohar Committee, excommunicating her with the approval of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, “for having constantly lied.” In other words, for having stood by the twenty-one wrongly accused Hindus neighbours.

    Let us pursue our investigation.

    Premeditated files
Human Rights Watch Smita Narula’s report (April 30th, 2002) was titled “ ‘We have no order to save you’ — State participation and complicity in anti-Muslim violence.” From US shores, its words were lapped up by the Indian elite and politicians:

What happened in Gujarat was not a spontaneous uprising, it was a carefully orchestrated attack against Muslims … planned in advance and organized with extensive participation of the police and state government officials.[13]
But where are the facts to corroborate such an allegation, which of course was instantly peddled the world over? Can a “carefully orchestrated attack” happen overnight? And how can someone sitting in the U.S., gauge the “spontaneity” of such an outbreak?[14]

    Authentic inquiry
By contrast, a genuine, on-the-spot investigation was conducted under the aegis of the New Delhi-based Council for International Affairs and Human Rights.[15] Its findings were made public as early as April 26th, 2002, through a press conference held in Delhi. Running counter to the politically correct line of an “orchestrated attack,” they were largely ignored by the media.
On March 3rd, 2002 the five-member fact-finding team under Justice Tewatia’s direction went to Godhra and spent six days visiting three affected areas in Ahmedabad and some of the relief camps. At all places, team members interacted with the two communities freely, without intervention of any officials. Five delegations from both communities presented their facts and views. The team then went to the Godhra railway station and interviewed officials, survivors and witnesses of the burning of the S-6 coach, as well as the fire brigade staff. They met the Godhra District Collector, along with other officials.
On April 4th, the team was in Vadodara (Baroda) visiting five relief camps of both communities, and seven areas which were the scenes of violence in the preceding month, as well as a number of sensitive areas. To have exposure to the ground realities they visited some areas still under curfew and also met the Commissioner of Police and District Collector along with other officials. Thirteen delegations consisting of 121 citizens met the team and presented their testimonies; they included not only members of both communities, but ranged from the Association of Hoteliers to a group of Gujarati tribals (Vanavasis).

    “Indisputable” facts
Let us quote some findings of Justice Tewatia’s Inquiry Commission, which its report described as “indisputable”:

    • The attack on Sabarmati Express on 27.02.02 was pre-planned and pre-meditated. It was the result of a criminal conspiracy hatched by a hostile foreign power with the help of local jehadis … carried out with the evil objective of pushing the country into a communal cauldron.
    • The plan was to burn the entire train with more than two thousand passengers in the wee hours of February 27th, 2002.
    • There were no quarrels or fights between the vendors and the Hindu pilgrims on the platform of Godhra Railway Station.
    • Firebombs, acid bulbs and highly inflammable liquid(s) were used to set the coaches on fire that must have been stored [the day before] already for the purpose.
    • The fire fighting system available in Godhra was weakened and its arrival at the place of incident wilfully delayed by the mob with the open participation of a Congress Councillor, Haji Balal.
    • Fifty-eight passengers of coach S-6 were burnt to death by a Muslim mob and one of the conspirators was a Congress Councillor, Haji Balal.
    • Someone used the public address system exhorting the mob “to kill kafirs and enemies of Bin Laden.”
    About the police:

    • Police was on many occasions overwhelmed by the rioting mobs that were massive and carried more lethal weapons than the police did.
    • [They] did not have the training and know-how to manage situations of communal strife witnessed in the state in recent weeks.
    • In many places, … [they] made a commendable work in protecting life and property. Barring a few exceptions, it was not found to be communally motivated.
    Army deployment:

    • Available information shows that the Army was requisitioned and deployed in time.

    After Godhra
The involvement of the “tribal” communities or Vanavasis, in the post-Godhra riots added a new dimension to the communal violence, as Justice Tewatia’s report reveals:

    • In rural areas the Vanvasis attacked the Muslim moneylenders, shopkeepers and the forest contractors. They used their traditional bows and arrows as also their implements used to cut trees and grass while attacking Muslims. They moved in groups and used coded signals for communication. Apparently, the accumulated anger of years of exploitation … had become explosive.

    About the media:

    • Gujarati language media was factual and objective. Yet its propensity to highlight the gory incidents in great detail heightened communal tension.
    • English language newspapers … appeared to have assumed the role of crusaders against the State [Gujarat] Government from day one. It coloured the entire operation of news gathering, feature writing and editorials. They distorted and added fiction to prove their respective points of view. The code of ethics prescribed by the Press Council of India was violated … with impunity. It so enraged the citizens that several concerned citizens in the disturbed areas suggested that peace could return to the state only if some of the TV channels were closed for some weeks.[16]
    A few healing voices
It would be unfair not to mention a few voices that rose from among the journalists themselves, against this enormity. The most eloquent one was Vir Sanghvi’s, usually part of the “secular” establishment, ever ready to portray Muslims as victims, Hindus as aggressors. Vir Sanghvi’s crisis of conscience suddenly gave him intellectual clarity. Some extracts from his article “One-way ticket” in The Hindustan Times of Feb. 28th, 2002:

There is something profoundly worrying in the response of what might be called the secular establishment to the massacre in Godhra. …
There is no suggestion that the karsewaks started the violence … there has been no real provocation at all … And yet, the sub-text to all secular commentary is the same: the karsewaks had it coming to them.
Basically, they condemn the crime; but blame the victims …
Try and take the incident out of the secular construct that we, in India, have perfected and see how bizarre such an attitude sounds in other contexts. Did we say that New York had it coming when the Twin Towers were attacked last year? Then too, there was enormous resentment among fundamentalist Muslims about America’s policies, but we didn’t even consider whether this resentment was justified or not.
Instead we took the line that all sensible people must take: any massacre is bad and deserves to be condemned.
When Graham Staines and his children were burnt alive, did we say that Christian missionaries had made themselves unpopular by engaging in conversion and so, they had it coming? No, of course, we didn’t.
Why then are these poor karsewaks an exception? Why have we de-humanised them to the extent that we don’t even see the incident as the human tragedy that it undoubtedly was …
I know the arguments well because — like most journalists — I have used them myself. And I still argue that they are often valid and necessary.
But there comes a time when this kind of rigidly ‘secularist’ construct not only goes too far; it also becomes counter-productive. When everybody can see that a trainload of Hindus was massacred by a Muslim mob, you gain nothing by blaming the murders on the VHP[17] or arguing that the dead men and women had it coming to them.
Not only does this insult the dead (What about the children? Did they also have it coming?), but it also insults the intelligence of the reader.
There is one question we need to ask ourselves: have we become such prisoners of our own rhetoric that even a horrific massacre becomes nothing more than occasion for Sangh Parivar-bashing?[18]
    S. Gurumurthy in The New Indian Express (March 2nd), Jaya Jaitley, in The Indian Express (March 7th), Rajeev Srinivasan in Rediff on Net (March 25th), Arvind Lavakare in Rediff on Net (April 23rd), T. Tomas in Business Standard (April 26th), François Gautier in The Pioneer (April 30th), M.V. Kamath in The Times of India (May 8th), Balbir Punj in Outlook (May 27th), each one expounded the absurdity of a situation where the majority of Indians — the Hindu community — are looked down upon as second class citizens. A negligible lot taken for granted because it is harmless, non-aggressive, and unable to speak and act as one coherent, organized group.

    A farcical interlude
Two and a half years after the events, on Sept. 3rd, 2004, the cabinet of the Central Government (ruled by the UPA coalition[19]) approved the setting up of a committee constituted by the Railways Minister Lallu Prasad Yadav, and headed by Justice U. C. Banerjee, former judge of the Supreme Court, to probe the causes of the conflagration in the Sabarmati Express.
“The blaze is an accident,” Justice Banerjee coolly concluded in January 2005. There was “no possibility of inflammable liquid being used,” said he, and the fire originated “in the coach itself, without external input.” The Cabinet ministers were fully satisfied.
Now among the few survivors, Neelkanth Bhatia, was not one. He gathered enough strength to challenge the formation of this committee, and in October 2006, the Gujarat High Court quashed the conclusions of the Banerjee Committee. It declared its formation as a “colourful exercise,” “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void,” and its argument of accidental fire “opposed to the prima facie accepted facts on record.” Moreover, one high-level commission conducted by Justice Nanavati-Shah had been appointed by the Gujarat Government to probe the incident, two months earlier. The Court also did not miss the point that the interim report was released just two days before the elections in Bihar — the State of the Railways minister, well-known for his political ambitions and notorious for his histrionics.
Politicians know no common sense or shame. But what about the judiciary?

    The Nanavati Report
The first part of Justice Nanavati-Shah Inquiry Commission report was released in September 2008, after four years of thorough investigations.[20] It lifted the cloak of blame that had been wrapped around the Gujarati people all those years. It also cleared the most blackened Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

There is absolutely no evidence to show that either the Chief Minister and/or any other Minister(s) in his Council of Ministers or Police officers had played any role in the Godhra incident or that there was any lapse on their part in the matter of providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and directions given by National Human Rights Commission. There is no evidence regarding involvement of any definite religious or political organization in the conspiracy. Some individuals who had participated in the conspiracy appear to be involved in the heinous act of setting coach S/6 on fire.
The policemen who were assigned the duty of travelling in the Sabarmati Express train from Dahod to Ahmedabad had not done so and for this negligent act of theirs an inquiry was held by the Government and they have been dismissed from service.
On the basis of the facts and circumstances proved by the evidence the Commission comes to the conclusion that burning of coach S/6 was a pre-planned act. In other words there was a conspiracy to burn coach S/6 of the Sabarmati Express train coming from Ayodhya and to cause harm to the Karsevaks travelling in that coach. All the acts like procuring petrol, circulating false rumour, stopping the train and entering in coach S/6 were in pursuance of the object of the conspiracy. The conspiracy hatched by these persons further appears to be a part of a larger conspiracy to create terror and destabilise the Administration.[21]
According to Justice Nanavati, Maulvi Hussain Umarji from Godhra was the brain behind the events. Two of the main accused, Salim Panwala et Farukh Bhana, are absconding, very likely having fled to Pakistan. The report named a few others, with various degrees of involvement in the events, but they are unlikely to be troubled in view of their political connections.

    Heartstrings for whom?
It is easy to see why the Nanavati Report was frowned upon by Citizens for Justice and Peace, namely Activist Teesta Setalvad who asked the Supreme Court “to restrain the Gujarat Government from acting upon, circulating and publishing this report.” Fortunately on October 13th, 2008, the highest court sharply turned down the petition, thus making the testimonies and inquiries available to all (the Nanavati Report is available on the Internet).
However, under pressure from the UPA Government and pestered by the National Human Rights Commission and Citizens for Justice and Peace NGO, on October 21st, 2008, the Supreme Court directed that the Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA) could not be used against the 134 accused in the Godhra train burning incident, whose trial was to be held under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code. This amounted to accepting prima facie that the guilty were not terrorists: we are allowed to call them “militants,” “gunmen” — but not terrorists. This ruling will have nationwide impact, as other State governments may have to drop charges under POTA against those accused of indulging in terrorist activities. The recent terrorist attacks on Mumbai (on November 26th) demonstrate the danger of such a withdrawal.

    Pattern for Harmony
This appears to be a pattern: whenever Muslim riots or bomb attacks target Hindus, it is thought acceptable to accuse the victims, in order to avoid possible revolts. Thus in 1993 in Mumbai, after eleven coordinated bomb blasts in Hindu majority areas, which killed 257 people and injured 713, the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Sharad Pawar quickly cooked up a twelfth explosion … in a Muslim area! “I have deliberately misled people,” he explained later, to show that both communities had been affected.”[22] And to portray both communities’ potential to behave as “terrorists”! Truth and clarity of mind are the casualties.
We remember the great art historian A.K. Coomaraswamy’s words in 1909:

It is unfortunate that libels upon nations and religions cannot be punished as can libels upon individuals.[23]

Gujarat had greatly suffered throughout all those years. Through a devastating Bhuj region earthquake in January 2001, in which more than 20,000 people died; the pilgrims burned alive at Godhra in Feb. 2002 and just six months later another terrorist attack in the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, where thirty-three peaceful worshippers were brutally gunned down (with seventy injured). Amidst those tragedies the people of Gujarat seemed to have no doubt whatsoever regarding the sincerity of their Chief Minister, whose administration happens to be among the least corrupt in the whole of India. State elections were held twice since those events: in December 2002 and December 2007. How is it that Narendra Modi won landslide victories on both occasions despite extremely hostile and sustained media campaigns, seeking to demonise him as a blood-thirsty ruler?

Official India has chosen to forget a millennium of Islamic intolerance and brutality. Millions of butchered Indians have no right to be remembered, not even in history textbooks, where invaders are sometimes turned into heroes. Sadly, this ostrich-like attitude leaves the wounds open and condemns us to relive the past rather than heal it.

Among the recipients, four are Best Bakery case witnesses. A list of names were sent to the CPI(Marxist) relief fund, and demand drafts were handed out at a function in Ahmedabad on August 26th, 2007 by CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat, Teesta Setalvad and Rais Khan. Incidentally, those who were both victims and eyewitnesses received 100,000 rupees, some others 50,000 rupees, while the victims got a mere 5,000 rupees each. Extracts of Justice Nanavati-Shah Inquiry Commission report

    (18 September 2008)

    223. Ajay Bariya in his statements recorded by the police on 4.7.2002 and J.M.F.C. Godhra on 9.7.2002 has stated that on 27-2-2002, he had gone to Godhra railway station at about 7.00 a.m. After referring to the incident of Mohmad Latika, he has stated that after the chain was pulled and the train had stopped, he had gone out of the station. Shaukat Lalu had met him there and told him to run along with them. So he had gone with them to the backside of Aman Guest House. Shaukat and others had then gone inside the room of Razak Kurkur and come out with Kerbas. He was asked to put one Kerba in the rickshaw which was standing nearby. Petrol like smell was coming from it. Thereafter others had also come there with Kerbas and they were all kept in the tempy. All of them had then got into that vehicle which after passing through Bhamaiya nala and Ali Masjid had stood near the railway track near ‘A’ cabin. Each one of them was asked by Shaukat Lalu to carry one Kerba with him. At that time he had come to know that the train was to be set on fire. They had run towards the train through the foot track. He himself was reluctant go with those persons but Shaukat Lalu had compelled him to go along with them. He has then described in his statement how the coaches were attacked and coach S/6 was set on fire. According to him, Shaukat Lalu and Mohmad Latika had forcibly opened the sliding door of S/6 leading to coach S/7 and entered coach S/6 through that door. Hasan Lalu had thrown a burning rag which had led to the fire in S/6.

    224. It is rightly pointed out by the Jan Sangharsh Manch that there was no prior information with the police and the authorities at Gandhinagar regarding the return journey of the Karsevaks from Ayodhya as can be gathered from the evidence of Mahobatsinh Zala (W-17), Raju Bhargav (W-31), DGP K.A. Chakravarti, Addl. DGP R.B. Shreekumar (W-995) and Ashok Narayanan, Chief Secretary, Home Department (W-994). Under the circumstances prevailing then, movements of Karsevaks was not a matter of concern. That appears to be the reason, why the police had not thought it necessary to keep itself informed about (171) their movements.

Merely because the police was not aware about the return journey of Karsevaks from Ayodhya, it would not follow therefrom that no one had known about their return journey from Ayodhya. Anyone who wanted to know about it could have obtained that information easily. Therefore, it would not be correct to say that there was no scope for any conspiracy, as the alleged conspirators did not know that Karsevaks were going to return from Ayodhya by that train. VHP had already announced earlier its plan of taking Ramsevaks to Ayodhya for the ‘Purnahuti Maha Yagna’.

    225. It is also true that some other train carrying Karsevaks going to Ayodhya had passed through Godhra railway station and the conspirators could have attacked them in pursuance of the object of the conspiracy to burn a coach carrying Ramsevaks and it was not necessary for them to wait till the morning of 27th February, 2002. Other possibilities cannot make doubtful what really has happened. Why the conspirators chose the Sabarmati Express train coming from Ayodhya and why coach S/6 thereof was made the target, was obviously the result of many factors, including what was desired by and suitable to the conspirators. Unless the conspirators who took that decision disclose the real reason, it would be a matter of drawing an inference from the surrounding facts and circumstances. It appears that the decision to put the plan into action was taken on the previous evening. On 26.2.2002 at about 9.30 p.m. the first step for procuring petrol was taken. It is likely that the conspirators had decided to burn a coach of this train as it used to pass Godhra during the night. That would have enabled them to carry out their object without being noticed and identified. It appears that because the train was running late, they had to make some changes in their plan and circulate a false rumour regarding abduction of a Ghanchi Muslim girl. That was done in order to collect large number of persons near the train and induce them to attack it, so that they get sufficient time to go near the train with petrol. It was also an (172) attempt to show that what happened was done by an angry mob because of the earlier incidents which had taken place at the station. The mob consisting of the general public would not have set coach S/6 on fire on the basis of the false rumour as their attempt in that case would have been to stop the train, search for the abducted girl and rescue her.

    226. Ranjitsinh Jodhabhai Patel and Prabhatsinh Gulabsinh Patel serving at Kalabhai’s petrol pump were present at the petrol pump on 26.2.2002 at about 10.00 p.m. Both of them have stated that at about that time Rajak Kurkur and Salim Panwala had come there and told Prabhatsinh to give them about 140 litres of petrol. Petrol was filled in the carboys which were brought in a tempy rickshaw. Prabhatsinh has further stated that Jabir Binyamin, Shaukat Lalu and Salim Jarda had come in the tempy. Both these witnesses have explained in their statements why they had earlier told the police that they had not given loose petrol to any one in a carboy on 26.2.2002.

    228. The confessions of Jabir Binyamin Behra, Shaukat alias Bhano son of Faruk Abdul Sattar and Salim alias Salman son of Yusuf Sattar Jarda have also been placed before the Commission for its consideration. Jabir Behra had made a confession before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Panchmahal District under section 164 of Cr.P.C. The confessions of Shaukat and Salim were recorded under the provisions of Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002. It was contended by the Jan (173) Sanghars Manch that the Commission should not consider the confessions of the accused as the findings that may be recorded by this Commission are likely to cause prejudice to the accused in the trial which is pending before the Sessions Court. This objection was raised at an earlier stage of inquiry and it was rejected by passing an order. …. The inquiry before by the Commission is a fact finding inquiry and therefore, the Commission can look into and consider any piece of evidence for finding out the correct facts provided it is satisfied about its correctness. (174)

    229. Jabir Behra in his confession dated 5.2.2003 has stated that he had gone with Salim Panwala to the petrol pump of Kalabhai for bringing petrol. Though the carboys filled with petrol were kept in the guest house of Rajak Kurkur, Salim Panwala had then gone to the Station to inquire whether the train was on time or was running late. Returning there from he had informed them that the train was running late by about 4 hours. Therefore, he had gone to home. He had again gone back to Aman Guest House at about 6.00 o’clock in the morning of 27th. Along with Salim Panwala, Shaukat Lalu and others he had gone in the tempy along with carboys to a place near ‘A’ cabin. He has further stated that Mohmed Latika had cut the vestibule between coach S/6 and S/7 and entered the coach through that opening and he had also followed him. Both of them had then together by force opened the door of coach S/6. They had gone inside with two carboys. Shaukat Lalu had followed them and opened the door of coach on A cabin side. Through that door Imran Sheri, Rafik Batuk and Shaukat Lalu had come inside the coach with more carboys. Those carboys were thrown in the coach and immediately thereafter there was a fire in the coach. Shaukat Lalu has also in his confession dated 19.8.2003 given these details. Salim Jarda in his confession dated 20.06.2004 has also stated that he had accompanied Salim Panwala, Siraj Bala, Jabir and Shaukat Lalu while going to the petrol pump of Kalabhai at about 9.30 p.m. for procuring petrol. He has also referred to the message sent by the Maulvi Saheb. Since he was reluctant to take any further part in such a bad act Rajak Kurkur had not allowed him to go. He was forced to stay in one room of the Guest House. He has then stated that next day morning he, along with Jabir Behra, Irfan, Shaukat Lalu and others had put the petrol filled carboys in the tempy and gone near A cabin. Rajak Kurkur and Salim Panwala had also followed them. He had thereafter not taken any part in the attack on the train and had remained standing at some distance.

All these three persons have retracted their (175) confessions but that by itself is not a good ground for throwing them out of consideration. When considered along with other facts proved by the evidence details given by this accused regarding the manner in which coach S/6 was burnt appear to be true. These confessions disclose that Rajak Kurkur and Salim Panwala were the two main persons who had organized execution of the plan and that what was being done was according to what was planned earlier and the directions of Maulvi Umarji. All the acts like procuring petrol, circulating false rumour, stopping the train and entering in coach S/6 were in pursuance of the object of the conspiracy. The conspiracy hatched by these persons further appears to be a part of a larger conspiracy to create terror and destabilise the Administration.

    229. The Commission is required to consider the role and conduct of the then Chief Minister and/or any other Minister(s) in his Council of Ministers, Police Officers other individuals and organizations in the Godhra incident (i) in dealing with any political or non-political organization which may be found to have been involved in the Godhra incident and also (ii) in the matter of providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots and (iii) in the matter of recommendations and directions given by National Human Rights Commission from time to time. There is absolutely no evidence to show that either the Chief Minister and/or any other Minister(s) in his Council of Ministers or Police offices had played any role in the Godhra incident or that there was any lapse on their part in the matter of providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and directions given by National Human Rights Commission. There is no evidence regarding involvement of any definite religious (176) or political organization in the conspiracy. Some individuals who had participated in the conspiracy appear to be involved in the heinous act of setting coach S/6 on fire.

    230. The policemen who were assigned the duty of travelling in the Sabarmati Express train from Dahod to Ahmedabad had not done so and for this negligent act of their an inquiry was held by the Government and they have been dismissed from service.
